Our colleagues have just returned from a two-week expedition at the Ventes Ragas field station on the Baltic Sea coast. During their stay, they collected blood samples from approximately 200 birds to analyse for blood parasites. The next few weeks and months will be dedicated to these analyses, bringing us closer to understanding the impact of these parasites on bird.

🦅🔬Laboratorijos mokslininkė Dr. D. Bukauskaitė kartu su kolegomis iš Paukščių ekologijos laboratorijos ir Kauno Tado Ivanausko zoologijos muziejaus atliko naują įdomų tyrimą. 🦅📰
Be to, nustatėme devynias genetines hemosporidinių parazitų linijas, iš kurių septynios naujos mokslui ❗❗❗❗

🦅🔬Our researcher, Dr. D. Bukauskaitė, in collaboration with colleagues from the Avian Ecology Laboratory and Kaunas Tadas Ivanauskas Museum of Zoology, has a new exciting study. 🦅📰
Did you know that avian haemosporidian parasites 🦠 are widespread globally, infecting many wild bird species? 🦅🦢🐦 Yet, research has primarily focused on passerine birds, leaving birds of prey understudied.
Our latest study aimed to fill this gap by examining the prevalence and diversity of these parasites in white-tailed eagles 🦅 and lesser-spotted eagles 🦅. We employed a non-invasive approach, extracting DNA from blood spots in molted feathers 💉🩸.
Results ❗❗❗❗ Parasite DNA 🧬🧪 was successfully detected! Resident white-tailed eagles had lower infection rates compared to migratory lesser-spotted eagles. Plus, we identified nine genetic lineages of haemosporidian parasites, seven new to science ❗❗❗❗
These results demonstrate how we can learn a lot about parasites in wild birds without needing to disturb them. This gives hope for studying protected bird species in the future. 🔬
