Introducing Our International Student Mentor

We are pleased to introduce Denise Abraham as one of the mentors in the International Student Research Mentorship Program at Stella Maris Polytechnic University.
Denise Abraham is a Liberian scholar currently living and studying in Canada. She is a recent graduate of MacEwan University, Edmonton, where she earned a BSc in Psychology and Biology (research-based study). During her time at MacEwan University, she served as a teaching and research assistant, gaining hands-on experience in academic research and student support.
Denise is deeply passionate about research, the sciences, and mentorship. She is now preparing to begin her studies in medical school, marking the next chapter of her academic and professional journey.
Through this mentorship program, Denise brings the perspective of a recent graduate, a research-trained scientist, and an aspiring medical professional; offering valuable guidance and encouragement to students navigating research, academics, and career pathways.
We are proud to welcome her to our international mentorship community.

Introducing the International Research Mentors 🌍🎓

We are proud to introduce Student Mentor - Jeremy Teddy Karn.
Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Jeremy Teddy Karn is a writer and educator whose academic and creative journey spans some of the world’s most respected literary institutions. He earned his MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he received fellowships in support of his work, and has taught Creative Writing at the University of Iowa.
He is currently a PhD student in Creative Writing and an M.D. Anderson Fellow at the University of Houston, where he also teaches First-Year College Writing.
Jeremy’s work has appeared in several magazines and journals, with more publications forthcoming. He is the co-founder of Pepper Coast Mag and currently serves as the Reviews and Interviews Editor at Gulf Coast.
Through this mentorship program, Jeremy brings not only academic rigor but also lived experience in creative research, publishing, and teaching; offering our students meaningful guidance as they develop their research and writing skills.
We are honored to welcome him to our international mentorship community.

I am pleased to share that Stella Maris Polytechnic University is launching its first academic journal, Stella Maris Studia — Journal of Research, Policy, and Innovation.
This inaugural volume is published under the theme AI, Research, and Innovation, and seeks to advance rigorous, ethical, and context-responsive scholarship relevant to Liberia and beyond.
We invite submissions from:
• Faculty and researchers
• Graduate (Master’s) students
• Senior undergraduates
• Alumni
• External scholars and professionals

Highlight from last semester
Strengthening Academic Integrity: Turnitin License and Training
In mid-September 2025, Stella Maris Polytechnic University secured a Turnitin license as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen academic integrity and research quality.
Following the acquisition, a training session on the effective use of Turnitin was conducted by Guillaume Uys, a Turnitin Senior Application Specialist, together with the Director of Research. The session focused on responsible use of the tool, interpretation of similarity reports, and best practices for supporting ethical academic writing.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs, Deans from the various colleges and graduate programs were in attendance, reinforcing the university’s collective commitment to maintaining high research and academic standards.

Last Semester at the Research Resource Center: A Brief Review
Last semester, the Research Resource Center supported several research-related activities aimed at strengthening academic writing, ethical research, and scholarly engagement at Stella Maris Polytechnic University.
These activities included research writing sessions, mentorship support, and academic discussions focused on improving research standards.

What the Research Resource Center Does
The Research Resource Center supports research and academic writing at Stella Maris Polytechnic University.
We provide guidance, mentorship, and resources that help students and faculty develop strong research ideas, write responsibly, and engage in ethical scholarly work.
Through workshops, writing support, and research activities, we work to strengthen a culture of inquiry and academic excellence across the university.
