Episode 2: Ecosystems

What is an Ecosystem?

Have you ever wondered how plants, animals, water, soil, and humans are connected?

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and with their non-living environment.

Simply put, an ecosystem includes:
🌿 Living things (biotic factors): plants, animals, humans, and microorganisms.
πŸ’§ Non-living things (abiotic factors): sunlight, water, air, soil, and temperature.

All parts of an ecosystem depend on each other. Plants provide food and oxygen, animals help with processes like pollination and seed dispersal, and microorganisms break down dead materials and return nutrients to the soil.

Examples of ecosystems in Liberia include:
🌳 Forest ecosystems
🌊 Marine and coastal ecosystems
🌱 Wetlands and mangrove ecosystems
🏞️ Freshwater ecosystems such as rivers and streams

Why do ecosystems matter?

Because they support life. They provide clean air and water, food, materials, protection from natural hazards, and resources that communities depend on.

When one part of an ecosystem is damaged, the effects can spread throughout the entire system.

For example, destroying mangroves does not only affect plants. It can increase coastal vulnerability, affect fish populations, and impact communities that depend on these resources.

Understanding ecosystems helps us understand why protecting the environment is protecting ourselves.

🌍 Welcome to GreFA – Green Future Agenda

GreFA is a Liberian citizen-led environmental and sustainable development initiative committed to building a future where environmental responsibility becomes part of everyday life.

We believe that protecting our environment is not solely the responsibility of governments or policymakers. Every citizen has a role to play, and lasting change begins with knowledge.

Through environmental education, community engagement, innovation, and advocacy, we aim to inspire and empower people to make informed choices that protect our environment and contribute to sustainable development.

Our work is guided by one simple belief: when people understand the environment, they are more likely to protect it.

This is just the beginning of a journey towards a greener, more informed, and more sustainable Liberia.

🌍 GreFA Explains

What is Environmental Stewardship?

When people hear the word stewardship, they often think of ownership.
But stewardship isn't about owning somethingβ€”it's about caring for something that has been entrusted to you.
Environmental stewardship is the responsibility of every person to protect, conserve, and wisely use our natural resources so that both present and future generations can benefit from them.
It means understanding that the environment is not someone else's responsibility. It belongs to all of us.
Environmental stewardship can look like:
🌱 Disposing of waste properly.
🌳 Planting and protecting trees.
🚯 Keeping drains and public spaces clean.
πŸ”₯ Avoiding the open burning of waste.
πŸ’§ Protecting our rivers, wetlands, and beaches. πŸ—£οΈ Encouraging others to care for the environment.

Stewardship is not about doing extraordinary things.
It's about making responsible choices every day.
At GreFA, we believe environmental responsibility begins with ordinary people taking ownership of the spaces around them.
Because a greener Liberia starts with responsible citizens.

🌱 For Nature. For People.

πŸ“– POLICY CORNER
~One Environmental Law Every Liberian Should Know~

Did you know that Liberia has a law that protects the environment?

The Environmental Protection and Management Law (EPML) of Liberia provides the legal framework for protecting Liberia's environment and ensuring that development happens responsibly.

Among other things, it:
🌱 Protects forests, water, land, and wildlife.
🏭 Requires projects that may harm the environment to undergo an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before they begin.
πŸ‘₯ Gives citizens a role in protecting the environment by encouraging public participation in environmental decision-making.

Environmental protection isn't just the responsibility of government agencies. Every Liberian has a role to play in protecting the environment through responsible daily actions.
Knowing our environmental laws helps us become better citizens and stronger advocates for a cleaner, healthier Liberia.

For Nature. For People.
