PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
The MANO RIVER UNION YOUTH PARLIAMENT IS SADDENING BY THE ACT OF BRUTALITY METED OUT AGAINST PEACEFUL STUDENTS AND DEMAND JUSTICE IN SAID MATTER.
Distinguished ideologues and compatriots, militants and cadres, astute leaders and members of the 4th Mano River Union Youth Parliament - Liberia Chapter (MRUYP-LC), developmental partners, the international community, and members of the fourth estate.
The MRUYP-LC extend its infinite greeting to you on the occasion commemorating the 175th independence of the Republic of Liberia.
The Mano River Union Youth Parliament in its strongest tune condemned the brutal and atrocious attack on peaceful citizens, students, and members of the Vanguard Student Unification Party(SUP) protesting under the banner "FixTheCountry" on the day of the independent commemoration.
Of all the peace and nonviolence engagements we have had and continue to have with the young people in Liberia, it seems so strange and embarrassing watching a video in which young people were boastfully and mercilessly seen brutalizing as they gathered at the American Embassy to communicate their feelings through a peaceful protest.
What is even more frustrating is that such incidents occurred on the day of our 175th Independence Day commemoration.
It has been the thought that politics and democracy as a country at 175 years have maturely transmogrified into tolerance of all fundamental human rights and every form of essential democratic tenets. Unfortunately, the video yesterday in which a colleague young man was script naked and tortured has completely changed said thoughts.
The act itself is only comparable to everything which plundered this Republic into our regrettable past of 14 years of civil unrest.
The act to counter-protest against peaceful protesters on the day of our independence is not only condemnable but has the propensity to undermine our peace after the 14 years of civil unrest.
As we condemn such an unlawful, undemocratic, and uncivilized venture, We, therefore, call on young people to stop accepting the invitation to perpetuate violence against themselves and join us in maintaining the hard-earned peace that we all one way or the other paid the price for.
In the same vein, we want to use this medium to call on the Government, and the International community to probe into the matter.
We demand Justice for the act exhibited against those peaceful protesters yesterday.
Youth breeding peace at the Mano River Union Youth Parliament, Liberia Chapter
May God bless us all and long live our country.
