BUCHANAN, Grand Bassa County –
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has dedicated a state-of-the-art science laboratory in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, as part of activities marking Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebration.

The facility, constructed through the initiative of Senate President Pro Tempore Sen. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, features fully equipped laboratories for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

It is designed to give public high school students access to practical science learning that has long been lacking in the County.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony on Monday, President Boakai said the project reflects the government’s commitment to turning Independence Day from mere ceremonies into tangible development that impacts citizens directly.

“This laboratory will move our students beyond theories in the classroom,” President Boakai stated. “It will provide hands-on opportunities to conduct experiments, understand scientific concepts, and develop the practical skills needed for higher education and careers in critical fields.”

Senate President Pro Tempore Karnga-Lawrence, who championed the project, said investing in science education is investing in Liberia’s future.

She noted that the lab will help prepare a new generation of scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and technology experts to drive the country’s economic transformation.

The dedication is being held under this year’s national theme: “Strengthening National Identity Through Liberian-Led Historical Leadership.”

Grand Bassa County is hosting a series of development and cultural activities ahead of the official Independence Day observance scheduled for Monday, July 27.

In addition to the science lab, President Boakai also dedicated other infrastructure and public facilities in the county.

The President also toured the Sport Academy that is currently under construction by President ProTempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence.

He further switched on the CLSG substation to light up Buchanan City, a move expected to boost commerce and improve living conditions.

Education officials and local stakeholders hailed the laboratory as a milestone, saying it signals that national celebrations should be matched with investments that shape the future of young Liberians.

The new facility is expected to serve several high schools in Buchanan and surrounding districts.
