THE WEIGHT OF BETRAYAL
Part 4: The Hardest Decision

By: ✍️ Enoch Manker Johnson / Historian

Before Namentoe reconciled with his uncle, Chief Guarker, the sitting chief at the time, had promised him a scholarship to Blue Christ University, one of the most prestigious universities in Liberia. Guarker had sent for Namentoe, and he was eager to join their camp. But tradition, family, and the cries of his elders pulled him back to his uncle's side.

Namentoe looked at the opportunity given and leaving it to go back home, where even his uncle was not prepared to sponsor him to such university, and he felt betrayed by his inner parts that spoke to him to go back, the heart that traditions spoke to, the elders that cried in his name, his father's, brothers, and kinsmen. He felt the pain of losing such opportunity that would not be given to him once in his life, and he was not willing to lose it. But family cries forced him to make the hardest decision.

Chief Guarker and his whole team were disappointed and very surprised. Namentoe had a big brother from deep in the chiefdom whose advice was powerful. His name was Dorr-Gbay-Dorr. He had served the sitting Chief, but Guarker and his team did not recognize his work until when Namentoe left his uncle and joined them. He spoke for Dorr-Gbay-Dorr, and even the chief began knowing the value of Dorr-Gbay-Dorr.

Namentoe convinced the team and made him popular by using his influence to recruit people, unite the members who back-slidded from the Guarker camp under Guarker's banner. Dorr-Gbay-Dorr was respected greatly because of how the almighty Namentoe carried him on his head. He was a valuable working point for Hon. Guarker through Namentoe's introduction.

Seeing Namentoe leave was something hard Guarker couldn't reconcile in his heart. Even while felling trees on his farm, people kept calling him, asking if he was aware that Namentoe had crossed over to his uncle Gbarpowonpoe, and whether he supported it. They asked if his personal advocate was gone, would he follow? They did not let his phone rest; people from everywhere in the world called to find out because when you see Namentoe, you see Dorr-Gbay-Dorr before his crossing carpet.

Dorr-Gbay-Dorr's phone was flooded with calls, and he was left wondering what had happened to the young Namentoe he had grown to admire. The Dan/Gio saying, "A tree that bends in the wind will survive the storm," echoed in his mind. Had Namentoe bent, or had he broken?

THE WEIGHT OF BETRAYAL
Part 3: The Reconciliation

By: ✍️ Enoch Manker Johnson / Historian Johnson
Gbarpowonpoe knew that traditions demand that a son should be respectful at all times, so he blamed Namentoe for leaving and explained ancestry stories to Namentoe like Kwatorwone did. He convinced Namentoe that there was nothing more important than family. Namentoe's friends heard about the meeting and called him, talking with him to agree. Even brothers from one mother and father who turned against him encouraged him to reunite with his family uncle. Namentoe knew the weight of tradition and decided to join his uncle again.

As Namentoe walked back into his uncle's compound, a mix of emotions flooded his heart. He was relieved to be back, but the memory of the pain and betrayal still lingered. Gbarpowonpoe's words were warm, "Welcome back, Namentoe. I'm glad you've come to your senses." But his eyes told a different story, a story of grudges and distrust.

Unbeknownst to Namentoe, Gbarpowonpoe's heart was still heavy with resentment. How could his own nephew leave him and work with the opposition? Could he truly be trusted? Gbarpowonpoe's supporters and rivals whispered in his ear, fueling his doubts. "Namentoe is a threat, a clever fox in the henhouse." "He's only back for one reason, to take what's yours."

The propaganda machine churned out stories, painting Namentoe as a opportunist, a user, and a betrayer. Those who had hated Namentoe for his once-close relationship with Gbarpowonpoe saw this as an opportunity to bring him down. They whispered, cased, and schemed, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Namentoe, oblivious to the danger lurking beneath the surface, settled back into his old routine. He attended meetings with his uncle, spoke on his behalf, and even participated in traditional ceremonies. But the more he participated, the more he felt like he was walking on thin ice.

Kwatorwone noticed the tension, the unease. He pulled Namentoe aside, "Be careful, nephew. Your uncle's heart is not as open as his words." Namentoe's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing. He knew that in their culture, silence was often the wisest choice.

The Kpelle saying, "A river may change its course, but it never forgets its source," echoed in his mind. Was he the river, or was he the source? Only time would tell.

THE WEIGHT OF BETRAYAL
Part 2: The Summoning

By: ✍️ Enoch Manker Johnson / The Pan-Africanist Johnson

Namentoe's heart was heavy as he sat in the small, intricately woven tach hall, surrounded by the whispers of his ancestors. Kwatorwone, his clan uncle, had summoned him to this sacred place, nestled along the coastline of Monrovia's Kpelleh Town, near the revered King Grave. The air was thick with tradition and expectation as Kwatorwone offered cola nuts, a gesture of respect and hospitality, and began to weave a tale of ancient stories and ancestral wisdom.

Namentoe listened intently, his mind racing with questions, as Kwatorwone explained that his uncle, Gbarpowonpoe, had a plan to bring him back into the fold. The reason was clear: in their clan tradition, a leader unable to resolve disputes with family members was deemed unfit to lead. Gbarpowonpoe needed Namentoe's support to bolster his position and speak louder among their people.

As Namentoe sat, lost in thought, Gbarpowonpoe arrived in a luxury car, accompanied by the very same gossiper who had falsely accused him. Namentoe's instincts screamed to flee, but the weight of tradition and the mighty GÀñwea, (a Very dark rock as symbol of war and wisdom), held him in place. His ancestors' spirits seemed to whisper in his ear, urging him to stay and face whatever lay ahead.

The scene was set, and Namentoe was trapped, unsure of what was to come. Would he find a way to reconcile with his uncle and restore his honor, or would this be a trap that would seal his fate? The tension was palpable as Gbarpowonpoe approached, his intentions shrouded in mystery.
