POLLUTION

Objective of the Lesson:

To discuss the harmful effects of pollution and how we can reverse the current state of pollution in our communities.

Key Idea:

Pollution comes in different forms: water, land, and air. Because the earth has limited resources, it is our job to take care of the earth and protect these important resources.
Description of the Problem:
Almost everywhere you look, you will see pollution. There is trash on the ground, chemicals in the air, and contaminated water. We have limited natural resources for everyone to use, and if we ruin them now, we will never get them back.

Consequences of the Problem:

Pollution causes sickness. Breathing air with chemicals from cars and factories can cause lung issues. Drinking polluted water can lead to viral and bacterial infections. Land that is polluted with trash and chemicals affects the quality of the food that you eat. Through pollution, we are ruining natural habitats and killing many animals. If we do not keep the earth clean and healthy, it will become uninhabitable in the future.

The Solutions:

Avoid throwing trash on the ground. If you see trash on the ground, pick it up and throw it in a dustbin.
Do not pour chemicals into water. Dispose of them properly.
If you can walk or ride a bicycle, avoid driving or taking auto-rickshaws.

Discussion Questions:

What are three forms of pollution?
What can pollution do to humans?
What can pollution do to animals?
What will happen to the earth if we do not stop polluting it?
6. What are the ways in which you can prevent pollution of air in your community?

Practical steps that can be taken by a community to address the issue:

Make dustbins available on public property.
If a rickshaw or vehicle is causing too much pollution, report it.
Teach the community how to dispose of chemicals, f***s, and dangerous wastes to protect the community from pollution and disease.

Waste prevention depends fundamentally on changes in the attitudes and behavior of individuals and businesses, and on a transformative shift in industrial processes and product design.

Waste prevention refers to practical actions that reduce the quantity of materials prior to materials and products becoming wastes.

Waste prevention is therefore fundamentally different from waste management activities, as waste management activities are implemented after materials become waste. Employing waste prevention strategies can effectively reduce the volume of waste that must be managed, placing less strain on local waste collection and management programs.

Waste prevention includes Avoidance – eliminating the need for a product or material; Source Reduction – eliminating waste and pollution at source through process changes; and Direct Re-use/Prolonging Use – extending product life, serving as a diversion of waste flows.

Our environment is more than a background: it’s our home. We are committed to caring for it. Here are some environmental service project ideas* that you and your club can do to help sustainably protect and restore our environment and improve the well-being of all communities.

Beginner Environmental Projects Ideas

Plant trees. Consult your local environment authorities to determine the type and number of trees needed, as well as the location for planting. Download our Tree Planting Project Planner.

Meet on a monthly basis and clean up a beach, community space or roadside area as a club.* Keeping Greenland Clean

Hold an environment-themed photo contest at a local school. Reward the winner with a tree planted in their honor or another green form of recognition.

Challenge all people in your club or district to add at least one green habit to their daily lives.

Inspire others by sharing your actions on social media. Habits might include:
Using a reusable water bottle or coffee mug rather than disposable products.
Changing to energy-saving lightbulbs.
Setting a time limit for your shower to reduce water consumption.

Develop a Green Living Tip Sheet and share it electronically with members of your community or network.

Recognize a local organization or community leader for their efforts in environmental conservation.

Volunteer with your local park service to maintain trails. You will help more people access and enjoy nature!

Advanced Environmental Projects Ideas

Develop a demonstration garden or landscaping plot using native plant species to encourage restoration of the local natural habitat and water conservation.

Sponsor a training program for small farmers on how to make and use organic fertilizers and pesticides.

Produce a monthly nature program on the local public radio station. Feature environmental topics of interest, interview environmental activists in your community and promote Lions environmental projects.

Host a public debate* on controversial environmental issues in your community. Share the results with government officials.

Partner with a local carpenter (or DIY tutorial) to build a rain barrel. Then, hold a training with community members to promote using barrels for watering and irrigation.

Rain Barrels Conserve Water
Organize an alternative transportation incentive program in your community to encourage walking, biking, public transportation and carpooling.

Work with local schools to develop school gardens and composting programs to improve the quality of school meals and reduce waste.

Environmental education is a way of implementing the goals of environmental protection. It is not a separate branch of science but lifelong interdisciplinary field of study.” It means education towards protection and enhancement of the environment and education as an instrument of development for improving the quality of life of human communities.

One of the most glaring problems which the world faces today is the environmental pollution. Man has exploited nature excessively at the cost of the environment. There is an immediate need to make people aware about environmental degradation. Education and public participation may change and improve the quality of environment.

Environmental education also has other positive effects on young people. In 2017, Stanford University studied how this subject affects schoolchildren all the way from infant school to high school. After researching more than a hundred scientific studies published on the subject from 1994 to 2013 by other institutions, they concluded that 83 % of schoolchildren improved their ecological behaviour and 98 % scored better in other subjects such as maths and science.

Benefits of environmental education in kids
action
Kids should start their environmental education at school. The fate of the planet will be in their hands, so it is crucial for them to learn how to use resources wisely and do their bit in the battle against climate change from an early age. The results of this difficult test could be a better, more sustainable and inhabitable world.

It is important for children to be taught respectful habits and how to care for the environment from an early age.
RAISING ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AMONG KIDS
Primary education is a crucial stage in the development of a person's behaviour, social awareness and selflessness. At school we learn values and behaviours that will stay with us throughout our adulthood and define who we are. That is what makes it so important to spark an interest in caring for and protecting the environment while children are still at school.
The aim of teaching children environmental education is for them to make caring for nature part of their lives, as opposed to just studying it. The idea behind this subject is for young people to develop a firm ecological mindset and use it to overcome today's environmental challenges with a proactive attitude and a strong commitment.
