Grand Bassa County is expected to receive a major boost to its education sector, as Cavalla Resource Limited prepares to disburse US$500,000 in scholarship funding to support students across the county.
The amount represents eight years of arrears owed by the company, which operates in District One, highlighting a significant step toward fulfilling its long-standing obligations to the county. Similar education-focused contributions from companies and local initiatives have played a key role in supporting students in Grand Bassa in recent years.
Speaking recently during a stakeholdersโ meeting at the county administrative building, Superintendent Karyou Johnson confirmed that the funds are ready for transfer into the countyโs account. However, he stressed the importance of carefully reviewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) before any formal signing.
According to the Superintendent, 20 percent of the total amount will be allocated directly to District One, where Cavalla Resource Limited operates.
To ensure transparency and accountability, a five-member committee was established to review the draft MOU, make necessary adjustments, and report back before the agreement is finalized.
The meeting brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including Paramount Chiefs, representatives of Grand Bassa University, the County Education Office, commissioners, governors, the Bassa Principals Association, members of the Muslim community, civil society organizations, the County Scholarship Committee, the County Health Team, and the Motorcycle Union.
Participants provided input on the agreement and emphasized the need for proper management of the funds.
At the close of the meeting, stakeholders commended Superintendent Johnson for his inclusive and transparent leadership, describing the process as a positive step toward accountability.
They also called for the timely and equitable distribution of the scholarship funds to ensure that deserving students across Grand Bassa benefit, and that the initiative delivers a lasting impact on education in the county.
