The Ceylon School for the Deaf & Blind

The Ceylon School for the Deaf & Blind The Ceylon School for the Deaf & Blind provides innovative education and vocational training.

The Ceylon School for the Deaf & Blind (CSDB) is governed by the Diocese of Colombo and managed by a Board of Trustees of which the Bishop of Colombo is the Chairperson. CSDB operates three residential schools, The School for the Deaf and The School for the Blind at Ratmalana, and the Nuffield School for the Deaf & Blind at Kaithady in Jaffna. Established in 1912, The Ceylon School for the Deaf &

Blind provides at anytime Education and Vocational Training to approximately 700 hearing and sight impaired children completely free of charge. While the State provides a grant to pay the salaries of a limited number of “Approved Cadre” teachers, and pays a nominal amount for feeding the children, the major portion of the expenses which amounts to approximately Rs 50 Million a year is raised by the Board of Trustees and provided by well wishers as donations.

We are deeply grateful to Wesley College and the Sub-Prefects' Guild for taking the initiative to visit the School for the Blind, Ratmalana, and spending a truly meaningful day with our students.

Through music, games, cricket, conversations, and fellowship, the day became a wonderful opportunity to build friendships, share experiences, and foster greater understanding. It was heartening to see students from both schools come together with openness, respect, and joy, proving that genuine connections are built through kindness and inclusion.

Education is often thought of as something found within the four walls of a classroom. Yet some of the most valuable lessons cannot be found in a textbook. ..
