IELTS –
Many people have developed a needlessly negative attitude about the difficulty of passing IELTS. As a solution they try to do their best to find ways to avoid doing the test, yet desperately need to get to their country of choice at the same time, which I believe is a very backward way of going about having a successful and productive life in a foreign country. Let me explain a few important points for you to consider.
IELTS test is specifically designed to measure your ability to work, study or live in an English speaking country without any outside help. Among the people who visit us for guidance as educators, a fair number seem to conveniently forget the fact that their intended study programmes or work require them to have a certain level of understanding in the English language in order to be effective and successful in a foreign environment.
It is therefore important to understand that if you are seriously considering moving to an English speaking country and want to be SUCCESSFUL in your new surroundings, you need to accept from the very beginning that IELTS is a MUST HAVE in your journey.
Having said that, let’s consider how much time one has to typically invest into mastering the 4 modules of IELTS. Experts believe that a person with good knowledge of English may need on average 30 hrs classroom training followed by an equal number of hours on home preparation. However this could vary between 20-40 hours. Depending on the individual’s ability. (Averaging out to a maximum of 10 hours per module)
As an example, a person who is fluent in speaking, may not need 10 hrs of training in speaking but 5 hrs instead. Likewise the same person may need the full 10 hrs of training in the writing module. This shows that the time factor may differ based on the individual ability.
It is also important to plan your IELTS preparations 2-3 months before your intended test date. This will give you adequate time for class room training and additional practice at home.
In my IELTS training classes, (Both Academic and General Training) I would first assess the ability of the student before deciding on how many hours of training would be required for him/her.
