𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: "𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨 & 𝐀𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐢 𝐅𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐦"

The newly established study area, attached to the Medical Library of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, was officially declared open on January 28, 2025. This facility was developed as part of the faculty’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and enriching the educational experience of its students. The faculty upholds the belief that producing doctors with a strong academic foundation and well-rounded attributes is essential to preserving the values of the free education system in Sri Lanka.

At the invitation of the Dean, two distinguished former academics, Emeritus Professor in Surgery, Prof Ranil Fernando and, a former Professor of Paediatrics, Dr Asvini Fernando, generously donated over Rs. 2 million to develop this facility. This contribution stands as a testament to their enduring support for student welfare. Both these distinguished academics dedicated decades of service to the faculty, instilling academic excellence, humanistic values, and professionalism in generations of students.

The study area was inaugurated by Professor Ranil Fernando and Dr. Asvini Fernando, in the presence of Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya and Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Dr Chilran Jayasundara, Librarian of the University of Kelaniya who attended to honor the generous contribution of the two esteemed academics. The event was also graced by Heads of Departments, academics, the Senior Assistant Registrar, the Deputy Bursar, non-academic staff members, and student representatives. This project is part of a broader initiative to improve faculty facilities for students by leveraging external funding.

Dr Lakmini Marasinghe, the Senior Assistant Librarian of the medical library, its staff, the civil work superintendent, and the works supervisors of the faculty extended their fullest support in making this study area a reality. The Vice-chancellor and the Dean extended their heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed.

📖️ 𝗟𝗜𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦 𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗬 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰

The Library Awards Ceremony, organized by the Library, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, in collaboration with the Faculty Library Committee and the Students’ Library Committee, was held on the 1st of April, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Main Auditorium of the faculty.
The event was aligned with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. The event aimed to raise student awareness of library resources, inspire the current library user community, and enhance student engagement in library affairs.
Cash awards and certificates were presented to winners of the Poster Competition on Breast Cancer Awareness, the best library user in 2023, and the online library quiz competition, organized by the Medical Library. The publication of “Medical Library News, Volume 02” was also launched at this ceremony. Prof. Aranjan Karunanayake from the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, delivered the guest speech titled “How to prevent injuries during sports and physical exercises”.
Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Prof. Madawa Chandrathilake, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. Chiran Jayasundara, the Librarian of the University of Kelaniya; Senior Professor Janaki Hewavisenthi, former Dean of the faculty; Ms. Chithra Abeygunasekera, former Senior Assistant Librarian of the Faculty; Prof. P. Paranitharan, Chair of the Faculty Library Committee; Dr. (Ms.) Lakmini Marasinghe, Senior Assistant Librarian of the faculty and Secretary of the Faculty Library Committee; Dr. Kavinda Dayasiri, Chairperson of the organizing committee of the Library Awards Ceremony; Dr. R. Suraweera, Former President of the Medical School Alumni Association, heads of departments, academic staff members of the faculty and the main library, Senior Assistant Registrar, and Senior Assistant Bursar of the faculty graced the event.
The members of the Faculty Library Committee, the Students’ Library Committee, students from MBBS, Speech & Hearing Sciences (SHS), and Occupational Therapy (OT) degree programs of the faculty and non -academic staff members actively participated at this event.

Today is an exceptional day for the Medical Library, University of Kelaniya. The library launched a fundraising project to strengthen the infrastructure facilities of the library to upgrade it to a Smart Library.
The Inaugural launch of the Medical Library Development Fund was held today at the faculty premises with the participation of Faculty Alumni, Academic staff members, and Students.
Prof. Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Ruwan Suraweera, President of the Kelaniya Medical School Alumni Association (KEMSAA), are invited as Guests to grace this occasion.
