The Department extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Harith Wickramasekara on being awarded the Excellence in Student Mentorship for the MBBS Programme (Phase II), and to Ms. Tharaka Thilakasiri on receiving the Faculty Excellence Award for Non-Academic Staff (Category 4) for the fifth consecutive year, at the recently held Faculty of Medicine Excellence Awards 2023/2024.

Lumière 2026, the annual Speech Camp organized by MBBS Batch 37, SHS Batch 18, and OT Batch 5 of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, was successfully held on 24th April 2026 at Vistaara as the concluding event of the English Intensive Course.

The event celebrated students’ progress in English language learning while showcasing their creativity, confidence, and communication skills through songs, dances, drama, speeches, and other performances.

The occasion was graced by Chief Guest Prof Aranjan Karunanayake, Cadre Chair, Department of Anatomy and Dr Pavithra Godammunne, Head, Department of Medical Education along with academic staff, visiting lecturers, and invited guests.

Lumière 2026 highlighted the importance of communication, teamwork, confidence, and creativity in shaping future healthcare professionals.

The launch of Bloom 2026, the annual English-language creative writing collection of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, was held on 12th March 2026 at the Vistaara Hall.

Featuring poems, short stories, reflections, and artwork by students of MBBS Batch 34, BSc Speech and Hearing Sciences Batch 15, and BSc Occupational Therapy Batch 2, the publication highlights the creativity and expressive talent of our undergraduates. The editorial team was led by Mr. Venura Balasuriya, with coordination by the English Language Teaching Unit, Department of Medical Education.

The event was filled with vibrant song and dance performances and included the ceremonial presentation of the magazine to invited guests. The occasion was graced by the Dean, Senior Professor Madawa Chandratilake, Head, Department of Medical Educaton, Dr. Pavithra Godamunne, and Head, Deparment of Disability Studies, Dr. Thilini Lokubalasuriya, along with members of the academic staff.

Bloom continues to provide a valuable platform for fostering creativity, strengthening English language skills, and promoting empathy through the Medical Humanities.
