SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka is taking a new step to strengthen families and protect children in Minuwangoda and Katana through our newly launched Family Strengthening Program. This program is not about providing temporary solutions. It creates lasting change by building families’ strength, confidence, skills, resilience, income opportunities, and wellbeing.

The success of the Family Strengthening Program goes beyond the support provided by SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka. It is built on strong collaboration with government stakeholders and local authorities, ensuring that families receive coordinated, relevant, and sustainable support. 🤝

Through close collaboration with the Divisional Secretariat, District and Divisional-level government institutions, Probation and Child Care Services, health, education, livelihood and other relevant government services, the program will connect families with existing public services, expertise and opportunities. 🌱🏡

We believe that these beneficiaries are not beneficiaries because they are weak. They are partners because they have the strength and potential to change their family’s future. Through this program, we will walk alongside 600 children and their families, providing opportunities and support to help families build sustainable livelihoods, strengthen parenting and family wellbeing, and create a safe, nurturing and hopeful environment for every child. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🛡️🌱

Today, we celebrate the women who make love, care, and family their life’s commitment.
An SOS Mother welcomes children into her heart and home, standing beside them through every stage of childhood. She nurtures, protects, guides, encourages, and creates the sense of belonging every child deserves.
Her role goes far beyond everyday care. She becomes the person who celebrates their little victories, comforts them through difficult moments, believes in their dreams, and helps them grow with confidence and hope.
And her love does not end with time. Even after retirement, she continues to be a mother, a grandmother, and a cherished part of the SOS family.
Every August 16, we honour the day the very first SOS Mother began this journey of love and care, and we celebrate the generations of SOS Mothers who have helped shape the lives of children across Sri Lanka home and a place to belong. 🩵🌷

We are proud to announce that SOS Children's Villages Sri Lanka is launching its Kinship Care Program in August 2026, a significant milestone in strengthening family-based care for children across Sri Lanka.

The program will initially support 100 children who, after losing the care of their parents, are now being lovingly raised by their biological relatives. These children and their caregivers have been identified across Piliyandala, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Monaragala, Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Gandara and Peraliya, in close collaboration with government authorities.

This initiative is built on the belief that children thrive best in a caring family environment. Through the Kinship Care Program, SOS Children's Villages Sri Lanka, together with government institutions and community stakeholders, will work hand in hand to strengthen these families through continuous guidance, monitoring and support, ensuring that children grow up in safe, stable and nurturing homes.

At SOS Children's Villages Sri Lanka, we firmly believe that every child has the right to grow up in a family, and every possible effort must be made to preserve and strengthen family-based care before considering alternative options.

This program also marks an important step towards our long-term vision. By 2030, we aim to expand the Kinship Care Program to reach 500 children, enabling many more families to provide loving and protective care for children who need it most.

Beyond direct support, SOS Children's Villages Sri Lanka remains committed to advancing family-based care nationally. Through strategic advocacy and partnerships, we will continue working alongside the Government of Sri Lanka to strengthen policies, systems and practices that recognize and implement Kinship Care as a sustainable family-based care option across the country.

This is more than a program; it is a commitment to keeping children connected to their families, communities and identities, while building a future where no child grows up without the care, love and belonging they deserve.

Together, we are creating stronger families, stronger communities, and a brighter future for every child.
