Performance reviews have value for employees and employers alike, highlighting what is and isn't working, and keeping everyone on the same page.

Employee performance reviews are important for every business, but their effectiveness depends on how they are conducted. They can empower your employees to reach new heights – or they could drive them away from your company.

Regardless of industry, most employee reviews include assessment of these skills:

+ Communication
+ Collaboration and teamwork
+ Problem-solving
+ Quality and accuracy of work
+ Attendance, punctuality and reliability
+ The ability to accomplish goals and meet deadlines

A review should also include any company-specific or position-specific competencies, as well as the employee's accomplishments and contributions to their role or organization.

A great review helps your employees identify growth opportunities and potential areas of improvement without damaging employee-manager relations, but writing a strong review isn't easy. Managers often don't receive enough guidance on what an effective and comprehensive review looks like.

Compounding the problem, small businesses frequently struggle with limited resources. For a company with 1,000 employees to conduct accurate and helpful performance reviews, a full-time HR staff of 14 is ideal. Even a company with 100 employees needs a full-time individual who compiles performance data from managers, who should spend an average of three hours on each employee review.

Employee motivation is a continuing challenge at work. Supervisors and managers walk a tough road, particularly in work environments that don't emphasize employee satisfaction as part of an embraced and supported overall business strategy.

On the one hand, they recognize their power in drawing forth the best employees have to offer, while on the other, they may not feel supported, rewarded, or recognized themselves for their work to develop motivated, contributing employees.

The suggestion for managers? Get over it. No work environment will ever perfectly support your efforts to help employees choose motivated behaviors at work. Even the most supportive workplaces provide daily challenges and often appear to operate at cross purposes with your goals and efforts to encourage employee motivation.

No matter what climate your organization provides to support employee motivation, you can create an environment that fosters and calls forth motivation from employees.

01. Communicate Responsibly and Effectively
02. Encourage Communication With Senior and Executive Managers
03. Create Opportunities for Employees to Develop Their Skills
04. Provide Opportunities for Employees to Self-Manage and Take on Responsibilities
05. Address to the Employee Concerns and Complaints
06. Employee Recognition and Awards
07. Foster Employee-Supervisor Relationships

As a manager, you want to develop and encourage good
employee performance, and good performance comes from
strong employee motivation. But managers can’t motivate
employees. Motivation is an internal state, like emotions and
attitudes, that only the individual can control. Managers can,
however, create a workplace environment that will inspire and
support strong motivation on the part of employees. That is
what we will explore in this book. Specifically, we will consider
how managers can:
◆ Create a workplace that helps employees satisfy psychological
needs as well as the need for income.
◆ Set clear goals for employee performance.
◆ Encourage good performance through rewards and
reinforcement.
◆ Maintain open communication with all employees.
We will explore these techniques in the following chapters. But
before we begin, let’s take a look at some of the unique features
of today’s workplace and how those features affect motivation.
