This message is to brief you on the meeting held regarding the 150th Jubilee Celebration of Ave Maria Convent, Negombo which was held on 25 th of April, for those who were unable to attend.

During the session, we discussed the **historical background of the school**, key upcoming events, and important guidelines related to Jubilee preparations.

# # # 📌 **Brief History of Ave Maria Convent, Negombo**

The school traces its origins back to the **1870s**, when an English girls’ school was started by Eva Coban and Maggie Coban with a small number of students in a house under the management of Rev. Fr. Assauw.

Over the years, the school developed significantly:

* In **1875**, plans were made to establish proper buildings for the school under Rev. Fr. Lanc Frank Assauw.
* In **1888**, French Sisters of St. Francis Xavier arrived, and the school was further developed under religious guidance.
* From **1909–1928**, under Rev. Mother Solange, several convent schools were established around Negombo, strengthening the institution.
* In **1929**, the school population increased and was organized into houses.
* In **1939**, the school was relocated to its present location on Chilaw Road with about 300 students and 20 teachers.
* In **1948**, the school was officially renamed **Ave Maria Convent**, and the feast was set for **25th March**.
* In **1955**, Rev. Sr. Annunciata retired after significant contributions to the school’s growth.

This rich history reflects the dedication of many religious leaders and educators who shaped the identity of Ave Maria Convent.
