Anthony’s Balika Maha Vidyalaya situated in Colombo 15 was a vision and dream of Chevalier C.S. Anthony J.P as they gifted the school in honour of their only daughter
Mary Margaret for the enlightenment and Education of children.
“ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD” being the motto of the school has carried a prestigious record in the field of education for the past 83 years, producing great men and
women
to the motherland. It was blessed by the Bishop of Colombo Rt. Anthony Cudher and the Parish Priest of St. James church Rev. Joseph Monmanon. Initially the school had only 45 both boys and girls and was named as “Mary Margaret English School” with the Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums. This was originally handed over to the Francis Xavier sisters who later on amalgamated with the Good Shepherds of the Island. The Good Shepherd Sisters who shouldered the responsibility of the administration and education of the students created a remarkable impact to create a catholic environment, no doubt leading its students to grow up to be successful in their spheres of life. This did
not deprive the children of other religions, the opportunity of observing their religious duties and rites too. Like all other schools of the island, this school also had to face the take over of the education by the Government in 1960, and was re-named as St. Anthony’s Balika English
School, which conducted classes from grade 1-13. It was unfortunate that the Primary and Upper School had to part due to administration difficulties and therefore they carried the name of St. Anthony’s Balika Primary School and St. Anthony’s Balika Maha Vidyalaya. The Mary Margaret English School was fortunate to have religious as her Principals from
in inception up to date. Today classes from grades 6 -13 are conducted in Sinhala Medium with the Art and Commerce section for Advance Level. It also has the privilege of offering its students
sports such as Netball and athletics. Also the Western band and a Hewisi Band, a Computer lab, Audio Visual room and a well equipped Home economics section. The
talents of the students of this school are unbelievable and all opportunities are provided to help them develop and shine out in dancing, singing and art. They have also brought credit to their Alma Mater by winning Provincial and all island contests, in many of the above mentioned fields. Even though the administration is shouldered by a religious, she is supported by a qualified staff and the unstinted effort of the prefects to carry on the daily activities of the school. English Day, Sinhala Cultural Day, Sports Meet, Prize Giving , Teachers’ Day, Children’s Day, School Day, Home Economics Day, Christmas Carols, Religious week,
Navodya Week, are some of the annual events on the calendar of the school schedule. The school not only helps the students in the academical field but also provides opportunities for them to organize and implement projects. The annual Leadership Camp
given to the prefects is an opportunity to disclose the potential and leadership qualities of students for which they are very grateful. It is a pride to all that this school has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a
reputed school of standards and therefore it bears the name “Navodya”
Since, the school has carried a very good record at all times from the times of its inception, parents of the area seek admission to the school for sound discipline for higher

Ever since, this convent was blessed with the administration of the Shepherdian Nuns, who have put in their best efforts to transform the school to what it is today. Theirdedication, diligence and commitment will always be remembered with gratitude. Today our school caters to the needs and aspirations of the present generation. They are given all the guidance and support, in building up character, personality and leadership qualities to make every students an honourable daughter of mother Lanka.
