His immense contributions to education and engineering will always be remembered.

We are proud to announce that Mr. Prabhathiya Herath from the Department of Mechanical Engineering (2018 intake) received VIDYA JYOTHI PROFESSOR DAYANTHA S WIJEYESEKERA AWARD for the Most Outstanding Graduate of the University of Moratuwa during the 44th General Convocation held on 21st of December 2023, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

This award is for the most outstanding graduate of the year who is a versatile graduate of the University of Moratuwa of proven academic standing with a GPA exceeding 3.7 (or First Class honours), who is recognized as a leader and held in high esteem by other students; and has made a significant contribution through participation and service to the university and community.

Mr Prabathiya Herath graduated from the University of Moratuwa, earning a Bachelor of the Science of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering with First-Class Honours with an overall GPA of 4.09 (out of 4.2). He was awarded the Gold Medal/Jayaweera Kuruppu Memorial Award (2023) for the best Mechanical Engineering graduate. He also received the IMechE (UK) Best Student Certificate for academic excellence in Mechanical Engineering for 2022/23. In addition to his outstanding academic work, he excelled in several co-curricular activities during his undergraduate days. He was a Vehicle Dynamics Engineer (2021-22) and the Chief Technical Officer (CTO/2022-23) of “Team FalconE Racing”, which is the department’s formula-electric student racing team. He and his team became first runner-up in the Formula Bharat (virtual) Competition in 2022. Moreover, he showcased his outstanding public speaking skills by becoming Sri Lanka’s Champion of the IMechE Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) 2021 competition and representing the country in the Southern Asia Regional Finals.

On top of his academic and co-curricular activities, he was a fine sportsman at the University of Moratuwa, wearing university colours for the years 2019 and 2022. He was the captain of the university’s basketball team for the year 2022 and led the team to become the champions of the Inter-University Basketball Championship in 2022. He and his team also received the Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) silver medal in 2019. Apart from basketball, he also became the Champion of the Inter-University Scrabble Championship in 2019.

We are also proud to say that this is the second time within three years (Chathusha Punchiwedikkara in 2021) that the Department of Mechanical Engineering has produced the most outstanding graduate of the University of Moratuwa.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering would like to congratulate Mr Prabhathiya Herath for his outstanding achievement and wishes him success in his future endeavours.

DoME family gathered to wholeheartedly thank Prof. Himan Punchihewa for serving the department as HoD over the past three years. Thank you, Prof. Punchihewa, for navigating the department through tough times and guiding it toward a better future.

DoME warmly welcomed the new 2021 intake of students ('21 batch) to the department, with best wishes for a fruitful and bright future.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DoME) warmly congratulates all graduates from 2017 intake, who were conferred their degrees during the 43rd General Convocation of the University of Moratuwa held on 20th and 21st of December 2022 at the Bandaranaike International Conference Hall (BMICH).

We proudly announce that Mr. Jayath Perera who did an astounding speech on the topic of "Improving world through solar power", has won the second place in Speak Out for Engineers (SOfE) Southern Asia Region (SAR) finals 2022 which was held on 17th December 2022 at the Hotel Resorte' Marinha Dourada, Bardez, Goa, INDIA. Congratulations Mr. Jayath and we wish you all the very best for a great future ahead.
