Learn a programming language. You shouldn't limit yourself to any particular language, but there are a few guidelines.

C is the language the Unix was built with. It (along with assembly language) teaches something that's very important in hacking: how memory works.
Python or Ruby are high-level, powerful scripting languages that can be used to automate various tasks.
Perl is a reasonable choice in this field as well, while PHP is worth learning because the majority of web applications use PHP.
Bash scripting is a must. That is how to easily manipulate Unix/Linux systems—writing scripts, which will do most of the job for you.
Assembly language is a must-know. It is the basic language that your processor understands, and there are multiple variations of it. At the end of the day, all programs are eventually interpreted as assembly. You can't truly exploit a program if you don't know assembly.

Merit-based scholarships ranging from partial tuition awards to full cost of attendance, renewable for 8 semesters, provided students maintain high standards of personal and academic excellence. Selection into the Emory University Scholars Program comes with the expectation that each Scholar will invest energy in active engagement with the community of Scholars and use the resources and support provided by the Program to shape the future of the University. What does it cover? The Emory University Scholars Program offers an array of benefits to build and engage the diverse community of Scholars.
-Merit-based scholarships ranging from partial tuition awards to full cost of attendance, renewable for 8 semesters.
-Distinguished faculty serve as program directors and advisors helping Scholars to plan and implement their activities and facilitating their access to academic and cultural opportunities.
-Priority in university housing selection (after the first year) and course registration.
-Stipends for undergraduate research.
-The Scholarship and Service summer program, an international community that places Scholars in non-profit internships in Atlanta and focuses on issues of social justice.
-Summer study abroad stipends
-Personal engagement with faculty mentors, faculty-led cultural outings in Atlanta, small-group discussion, and other intellectual endeavors.
-Stipends for cultural experiences in Atlanta.
-Community-building programming, including the Scholars Fall Retreat.
Selection Criteria: The selection for merit-based scholarships is administered by the Emory University Office of Undergraduate Admission in conjunction with Emory College, Oxford College, and the Goizueta Business School. The scholarship selection process remains separate from the financial aid application process and will have no impact on a student’s need-based financial aid award. Scholar applicants will receive notification of their standing in the selection process by the end of January. If selected as a finalist, students will be required to attend the finalist interview weekend in February / March (2014 dates to be determined). The scholar weekend activities are designed to help finalists become better acquainted with programs and opportunities available to them and to aid the Scholars Selection Committee in making its final choices for the various awards. To be considered for a finalist award, attendance at the Scholars interview weekend is mandatory.
Notification: Successful applicants will be notified in Late January. If selected as a finalist, students will be required to attend the finalist interview weekend in February / March (2014 dates to be determined).
How to Apply: To be considered for the Emory University Scholars Program (including the Woodruff, Oxford, and Goizueta Scholarships), students must select one of Emory’s three admission decision plans (Early Decision I, Early Decision II, or Regular Decision). Students must submit all required application materials, including the additional Scholars Essay, by the November 15 Emory University Scholars Program deadline—if your selected admission plan is ED II or RD. Students applying ED I may apply for the Scholars program, but need to meet the November 1 deadline for all materials.

Please note for the 2013-2014 application cycle, applicants no longer need to be nominated by a high school guidance / college counselor to be considered for the Emory University Scholars Program, and no additional nomination forms are required. Students can nominate themselves via their Common Application, and the only additional requirement is answering one of the following two Scholar essays as part of the Common Application Writing Supplement on the Emory “My College” page:
