Unseen Text - bunpeiris Literature 27/09/2025

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris. Indeed, any text can remain an unseen text until you enjoy the opportunity to read, study and lift yourself to a higher level of comprehension. If the literary, factual and discursive passages that you read and study at school or on your own is termed “seen passages”, all other texts become “unseen passages.” The method that you follow in approaching a text in school is applicable to unseen passages that you encounter in the examination too. As such what is tested in the examination is your ability in application of your approach to the texts as you have “discussed” [rather than teacher oriented-taught] works of literature at school. Unseen passages put your analytical powers to a rigorous test as they do not permit the advantage of memorization of third-party analysis, i.e. that has already been done by your teacher, tuition master or online sources.

Consider the Language, Form, and Structure of the given passage

Language:

Language, Structure and Form [1] - bunpeiris Literature 27/09/2025

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris. Cambridge Assessment International Education, by encompassing another Assessment Objective [AO] that the students “demonstrate understanding of how writer achieve effects and influence readers”, (Cambridge Assessment International, Cambridge O Level English) now streamlines Cambridge OL English Language [1123] syllabus furthermore to Cambridge AS & A Language [9093] and Literature in English [9695]: “We have made changes to our Cambridge O Level English Language syllabus to improve how learners demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and application in English.” (Cambridge Assessment International, Cambridge O Level English).

The heart of matter in Education being the application of learned subjects in situations diverse, the vitality of the new AO could hardly be left without a comment. Application refers to the “use of abstractions in particular and concrete situations” (Bloom 1956). Levels of learning as explicated in Bloom’s taxonomy features remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating in ascending order. While remembering presents the lowest level of learning, creation of course, showcases the learner’s or practitioner’s highest level of learning. Simply, have look at your mobile, stop taking features therein for granted, and think of the numerous ways the creation of it has transformed the life. On Tuesday, the 9th of January 2007, introducing iPhone, Steve Jobs gushed of his three in one: a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device. Mr. Jobs called it “revolutionary and magical product.” Today, in 2022, fifteen years since then, and more than 2 billion phones later, he was right to the boot. The job of the human race is to contribute towards the benefit, the progress and the ascendancy of humanity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Etyt4osHgX0 https://www.bunpeiris.org/language-structure-and-form-1/

Learn to Write: The Sword and Shield - bunpeiris Literature 27/09/2025

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris. Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, one of the most popular intellectuals in the modern West, delivers what may be the most succinct and compelling case for mastering writing:

“Learn to write. It’s the sword and shield of the modern person. It’s the best weapon you can possibly have. It’s the best defense you can possibly have. If you can think and speak, and write, you are absolutely deadly. Nothing can get in your way” (Peterson, 2018).

This aphorism fuses martial imagery with an epistemic truth. Writing is at once an instrument of thrust and parry: offense through persuasion, defense through protection against error, manipulation, and intellectual passivity. Superior command of language guards not only against academic mistakes but also against the influence of corrupt individuals, institutions, and regimes bent on misleading and deceiving the masses.

From Cambridge English Language AS,AL 9093 to Jordan Peterson - bunpeiris Literature 27/09/2025

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris. Cambridge A Levels are highly specialized, and students normally do take three core subjects, although they may have one or two optional subjects. But then English language [how to communicate effectively on the world stage] and Literature in English [how to live, how to engage in analytical & critical thinking]
are not optional subjects, although such is the tag attached to them. Both of them provide you with the springboard to critical thinking at the university.

The value of superior command of the English Language, a transferable skill, that would pave the way for Academic English at the post-graduate level, leading to Critical Discourse Analysis, needs to be super-emphasized on the grand stage of education around the island.
Incidentally, Critical Discourse Analysis is the post-graduate level study of the text concept of “language, Form and structure” that is taught to Cambridge AS & A students at the college: English Language [9093].

I believe the students and parents need to be enlightened about the value of learning English. In this situation, I must not fail to emphasize that the revised version of the Cambridge English OL Level syllabus for the year 2024 onwards is streamlined with Cambridge AS & A [9093]. As such, I dare to declare that the students following the revised OL syllabus in the year 2024 onwards would be better equipped to study Cambridge AS & A English Language [9093], with its focus on the language, Form, and structure [linguistic analysis] than the present groups of AS & A students at STI. I am greatly heartened.

Cambridge O L (1123) and Cambridge AS AL (9093) to CDC [1] - bunpeiris Literature 27/09/2025

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris Cambridge English OL 1123 and AL 9093 to CDA [PART 1] by bunPeiris

The Cambridge IGCSE (OL) English Language 1123syllabus is perfectly streamlined to serve as a direct foundation for the Cambridge International AS & A Level English Language 9093. The skills you develop at the OL level are not abandoned; they are refined, deepened, and theorised at the AL level.

This progressive pathway of linguistic analysis is not merely an academic exercise. It is the essential training field and the target range for the critical skills required in university-level discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis (CDA). The journey from identifying a writer’s effect at OL to deconstructing the ideology embedded in language at AL equips students with a powerful intellectual toolkit. This toolkit allows them to dissect the language, or rather dissect the discourse of powerful entities—be they corrupt politicians, manipulative corporations, terrorist states, or neo-colonial powers—and see beyond the surface meaning to the underlying intentions, biases, and power structures.

Ultimately, this streamlines into a form of intellectual self-defense. It empowers students to recognize manipulation, challenge propaganda, and deconstruct the narratives that are often used to maintain inequality and suppress the voices of the Global South and other marginalized groups. It transforms students from passive consumers of language into active, critical, and empowered analysts.

The Overarching Philosophy: From Skill Application to Linguistic Analysis

OL 1123 (Foundation): Focuses on applying language skills. You are primarily a user and responder to language. You identify what a writer is doing and what effect it has.

AS/AL 9093 (Progression): Focuses on analysing language as a structured system. You become a linguistic analyst. You explain how and why a writer uses specific linguistic features within a broader framework, often using appropriate terminology.

Cambridge and Edexcel English Light the Way - bunpeiris Literature 27/09/2025

WRITTEN by bunPeiris. Excel in English Language with bunPeiris of Moratuwa: enjoy Cambridge English Language O Level (1123) and AS/A Level (9093), or the equally distinguished Edexcel and AQA English Language syllabi. All these programmes offer exceptional depth and challenge. I have a deep admiration for Cambridge O Level 1123 and AS/A Level 9093—they are truly outstanding. Studying English through Cambridge O Level 1123 and AS/A Level 9093 equips students with superior linguistic competence in comparison to the following:
[a] Cambridge International Education
English Language and Literature [AS only] [8695]
English General Paper [AS only]
[b] Cambridge Language Assessment
C1 Advanced, formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
and C2 Proficiency, formerly known as Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE)

Cambridge O Level 1123 builds foundational skills: decoding language features, crafting descriptions, and inferring [deriving meaning, arriving at your conclusions based on the evidence from the text and your reasoning]. These basics are vital, but the A Level elevates learning by demanding critical analysis of socio-cultural contexts, sophisticated argumentation, and stylistic deconstruction. Together, they foster holistic literacy—from identifying a metaphor’s charm to dissecting its ideological power. In a globalized world, such dual proficiency empowers students to articulate nuanced [characterized by subtle shades of meaning or expression] perspectives, engage with diverse texts, and persuade audiences intelligently. Without this progression, learners risk superficial understanding; with it, they gain tools for academic, professional, and personal success.

If you have failed to comprehend the above explanation in its entirety, you may read the following explanation written in simplified form.
Cambridge O Level 1123 helps you build important English skills like understanding how language is used, writing clear descriptions, and making meaning from clues in the text. These are the basics. At A Level, you go further by thinking more deeply about the writer’s world, building strong arguments, and closely studying how writing is put together.

Cambridge OL English Essay 27/09/2025

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris Writing Essays Is Within You: Its All Yours
The task of an essay set by Cambridge OL English language examination is an opportunity for you all to express yourself with all the reasoning powers of yours. You do reason all the time; at home get your parents to agree to what you need; you argue at school presenting your perspectives making the teacher elaborate the subject, sometime in a way he has never done before; you do explain matters to your friends to iron out the differences that arose following a conflict among you. It is with reasoning we arrive at cause and effect, truth and falsehood, who is right, who is wrong and what is good or bad. You have been reasoning all over the show, in & out of the party & the park, all your life. Now, in the task of an essay, you aren’t asked to do anything alien; you are only asked to do what is within you, inherent in you. All you have to do is reason out. All you have to do is applying the same reasoning powers of yours to the essay task set in the examination. But then, to perform well at this level in Cambridge OL, by now, you should have learned English grammar well: you need to maintain consistency in tenses and make use of all four sentence types, i.e. simple sentence, compound sentence, complex-sentence & compound-complex sentences. You should have become competent in the “Use of language”, the fifth strand that supplement your Macro-skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. You should have grasped the concepts of tone and register of English language. You would have acquired these micro competencies by reading supplementary graded readers in all your lower grades till grade 9 in school. If you haven’t read classics, if you haven’t enjoyed the likes of “ Tom Sawyer”, ‘Oliver Twist”, “Robinson Crusoe”, “Gulliver’s Travels”, “Moby Dick” & “Rostam and Sohrab”, still it isn’t too late: you can begin now.

WRITTEN BY bunPeiris. RAISE YOUR COMPETENCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TO GLOBALLY OPERATIONAL LEVEL
[Your day-to-day chit chat English doesn’t get you anywhere up: let your words flow on the paper & ring in the ears.]

“Criticize everything that moves”
[Now, take it easy: don’t be nasty or negative about everything. All you have to do is, instead of just accepting what you are told, ask why and hunt for the answers today as if there’s no tomorrow. In an essay title, criticize probably means you should give your judgment about the merit of [a] theories or opinions or [b] about the truth of facts, and back your judgment by a discussion of the evidence.]

At this stage in Cambridge OL, you may have definitely realized a superior command in English language is absolutely central to your learning: without it, you will not have argumentative skills sharpened with persuasive punches. Development of your language skills and specifically, your academic English is an on-going process. Mastery never comes [There’s only one master- Shakespeare], yet superior command in language is all yours, provided you put your heart to the matter.

How do I gain a superior command of English language?
[a] Read all the time. Read works of literature till death.
[b] Carry on developing your “micro skills” i.e., grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation till you gain higher competence
[c] Continue raising your four ‘macro skills” i.e., listening, speaking, reading, writing till you gain superior command
[d] Then again, you need to excel in Use of Language. Think about not only on what you say, but how you say it.
Well, that’s the edge, a really sharp edge, if you get it.
