Why Fire Chooses Its Colors
Light a Bunsen burner and hold up a pinch of the wrong salt, and nothing happens. The flame stays the same. Hold up the right one, and it turns a colour so vivid it looks staged. It isn't. It's chemistry doing exactly what it always does - just this time, you can watch it happen.
Here's what's really going on.
A metal salt like sodium chloride is held together as a lattice of charged ions. Before anything colourful can occur, the flame first has to tear that lattice apart and strip the ions down to free, neutral atoms. This alone takes real energy - and if the flame isn't hot enough, the process ends right there. No atoms, no colour, no show.
If enough heat is available, the story continues. A valence electron in the newly freed atom absorbs energy and jumps to a higher, unoccupied orbital - a state it cannot hold onto for long. Almost instantly, it falls back, releasing the energy it borrowed as a photon.
The colour you see or don't - comes down to one thing: the size of the energy gap between the orbitals involved. In sodium, that now-famous yellow flame comes from an electron dropping from a 3p orbital back to 3s. Other elements involve different gaps entirely, and many of those gaps correspond to ultraviolet or infrared light - energy leaving the atom, invisible to us the whole time.
So only a handful of elements happen to have an energy gap that lines up with visible light:
Lithium โ red (Carmine)
Strontium โ red (Crimson)
Calcium โ orange-red
Sodium โ yellow
Barium โ apple green
Copper โ blue-green
Potassium โ lilac
