The Sports and Exercise Science Unit proudly congratulates our undergraduate, Ms. Hesanya Huvindee Welikala, for her remarkable achievement at the 8th Asian Taekwondo Indonesia Championship 2026 (G-2) World Ranking, held in Indonesia from 1st–5th August 2026.

Competing in the Individual Poomsae U-30 category, she received the prestigious β€œGood Fighting Spirit” Award, recognizing her outstanding determination, sportsmanship, and fighting spirit throughout the competition.

The Sports and Exercise Science Unit, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, proudly congratulates Ms. Subodha Gamage, a Fourth-Year Undergraduate of the BSc (Hons) in Sports and Exercise Science Degree Programme, on her outstanding achievement at the 2nd South Asian Throwball Tournament.

Representing Sri Lanka as the Vice Captain of the Sri Lankan Women’s Throwball Team, Ms. Gamage played a significant role in helping the national team secure Third Place in the Women's category, bringing honour and recognition to the country on the international stage.

Adding to this remarkable accomplishment, she was awarded the Player of the Match title in the Sri Lanka vs. Bhutan encounter, in recognition of her exceptional performance and contribution to the team's success.

Four final-year undergraduate students following the BSc Honours Degree in Sports Science at the Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, have achieved a notable academic milestone by being selected to receive the prestigious Research Incentive Grant under the National Research Symposium on Youth Development (NRSYD) 2026.
The National Research Symposium on Youth Development (NRSYD) 2026, jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and The Open University of Sri Lanka, serves as a national platform dedicated to promoting and strengthening a research culture in youth development. The symposium provides opportunities for emerging researchers to contribute to national development through innovative, evidence-based research.
The recipients of the Research Incentive Grants are Subodha Supuni Gamage, Athukoralalage Dona Sammani Iroshima, Galabalannalage Udani Sewwandi Jayathissa, and Gunasingha Kosh*th Vihanga Gunasingha. Of the four research projects, three undertaken by Subodha Supuni Gamage, Athukoralalage Dona Sammani Iroshima, and Galabalannalage Udani Sewwandi Jayathissa are supervised by Dr. P. Buvanendiran, while a project undertaken by Gunasingha Kosh*th Vihanga Gunasingha is supervised by Mr. D. S. Weerasinghe.
The grants were awarded in recognition of the students’ outstanding research contributions, academic excellence, and commitment to advancing knowledge in the fields of youth development and sports science. Their achievement reflects the high standards of undergraduate research conducted within the Sports Science programme at the University of Kelaniya.
This accomplishment further highlights the growing research capacity, innovation, and academic potential of Sports Science undergraduates at the Faculty of Science. It also underscores the University of Kelaniya’s continued commitment to fostering research excellence and encouraging active student engagement in scholarly pursuits.
