John Keats is one of the most important poets of the Romantic period in English literature. He belongs to the second generation of Romantic poets, along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Although Keats wrote poetry for only about four years before dying of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-five, he still achieved great literary fame.

During his lifetime, Keats did not receive much appreciation from critics. However, after his death, his reputation steadily grew, and by the end of the nineteenth century, he was considered one of the greatest poets in English literature. His work influenced many writers across the world. For example, Jorge Luis Borges said that reading Keats for the first time was one of the most powerful literary experiences of his life.

Keats’s poetry is famous for its rich and vivid imagery, especially in his odes. His work reflects key Romantic ideas such as deep emotion and a strong connection with nature. Today, his poems and letters are widely studied and admired. Some of his most well-known works include Ode to a Nightingale, Sleep and Poetry, and On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer.

Keats is considered a true Romantic poet because his work shows all the main features of Romanticism:

His poetry is full of strong feelings and imaginative ideas. Poems like Ode on a Grecian Urn show his ability to express deep emotions and create beautiful imaginative scenes.

▪️Love of Nature:

Nature plays an important role in his poetry. He presents it as a source of beauty, peace, and inspiration. His descriptions are detailed and sensuous, as seen in To Autumn.

▪️Love of Beauty:

Keats strongly believed in the importance of beauty. His famous line “Beauty is truth, truth beauty” shows his belief that beauty has a deep and lasting value.

▪️Awareness of Death and Change:

He was deeply aware that life is short and death is inevitable. This idea gives his poetry a sad and thoughtful tone. His poem When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be reflects this feeling.

▪️Interest in Myth and the Past:

Keats often used themes from medieval stories and Greek mythology. Poems like La Belle Dame sans Merci and Hyperion show this interest.

▪️Personal Expression:

His poetry often expresses his own thoughts, feelings, and inner struggles, showing the Romantic focus on individual experience.

▪️Power of Imagination:

Keats believed imagination could go beyond ordinary reality and reveal deeper truths. His poetry takes readers into a world of beauty and emotion.
