We are delighted to share that Mr. Promod Tharuka, who served as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, has assumed duties today as an Assistant Librarian at Ocean University of Sri Lanka.

During his time with us, he also rendered valuable service as a Research Assistant at the Palm Leaf Manuscripts Study and Research Library, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, contributing significantly to manuscript studies and preservation initiatives.

As a Department, we take immense pride in his achievement. Mr. Promod Tharuka is truly an excellent product of our Department and his dedication, commitment and academic enthusiasm have always been commendable.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to him and wish him every success in his new position. May this new chapter bring him continued growth and professional excellence.

Proud Moment for the Department of Library and Information Science!

We are delighted to announce that the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya has successfully won the grant for the proposal titled:

“Literary Month Celebration: Igniting Rural Minds – Library Student Ambassador 2026”

This significant achievement marks another milestone in our continuous commitment to community engagement, literacy promotion, and rural knowledge empowerment. The project aims to inspire young minds in rural communities, promote reading culture, and empower students to serve as Library Student Ambassadors who will actively contribute to knowledge dissemination and social development.

As a department of the University of Kelaniya, we remain dedicated to extending our academic excellence beyond the university walls and fostering meaningful community partnerships.

Let us move forward together in igniting rural minds and strengthening the future of literacy in Sri Lanka.

The 12th volume of the Library Science Journal, published by the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, was officially launched on 17th February 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor’s office of the University of Kelaniya.

The event was graced by Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the Univeristy of Kelaniya, and Mr K. K. K. Dharmathilaka, the Registrar. The occasion was also attended by Dr Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science; Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya, other academic staff members, and students of the 2019/2020 batch.
The launch marks another significant milestone in promoting scholarly research and academic excellence in the field of Library and Information Science.

An initial discussion was held between Room to Read and the University of Kelaniya regarding the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Library and Information Science.

The meeting took place with Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, on February 10, 2026, at the Vice-Chancellor’s office, to explore potential areas of collaboration.

The event was attended by Mr Michael Bowers, Chief Programme Implementation Officer; Mr K. Pathmannathan, Country Director for Sri Lanka; and Mr Indika Ganegoda, Senior Manager, representing Room to Read.

Representing the University of Kelaniya were Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor; Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe; Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya; Dr Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science; and Dr Niluka Harshani.

The Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, inaugurated the Diploma in Library and Information Science Programme at the University of Kelaniya, marking an important milestone in the Department’s contribution to professional education in the field of library and information science.

The inauguration ceremony commenced with the welcome address delivered by the Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe, who highlighted the importance of professional training in developing competent library and information professionals to meet contemporary information needs.

Following this, Professor M. M. Gunathilake, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, addressed the gathering and emphasized the role of academic programmes in strengthening knowledge dissemination, information literacy and lifelong learning within society.

A special address on the Department of Library and Information Science was delivered by Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya, who outlined the academic vision, scope and future direction of the discipline, highlighting its relevance in the digital and knowledge-driven era.

The keynote speaker was introduced by Lecturer Ven. Bopeththa Somananda Thero, after which the keynote address was delivered by Senior Professor Petric Rathnayaka. In his address, Professor Rathnayaka emphasized the importance of reading in intellectual development, critical thinking and the cultivation of an informed society.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Senior Lecturer Dr. Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, expressing gratitude to all contributors and participants who supported the successful conduct of the programme.

The event was attended by Mr. Sarath Nanda Kumara, Director of Library and Museum, National Education Institution, Mr. Sarath Perera, Visiting Lecturer of the Department of Library and Information Science, academic staff members of the department and students. The inauguration reaffirmed the University of Kelaniya’s commitment to advancing professional education and strengthening the library and information science sector in Sri Lanka.
