📚✨ Innovative Debate Experience at DLIS ✨📚
On 13th August 2026, the Level 4 undergraduates of the Department of Library and Information Science took part in a creative debate competition organized as part of the Digital Library paper.
The theme — Digital Library vs. Traditional Library — challenged students to think critically, argue persuasively, and connect theory with practice. Their preparation, confidence, and performance were truly inspiring. 🌟
This initiative was designed to develop student competencies through real‑life experiences, and the objective was successfully achieved. 👏

READ Digital Magazine Volume 03 Launched Under the Theme: “The Digital Touch of Sustainable Reading~ තිරසාර කියවීමේ ඩිජිටල් ස්පර්ශය”
The Media Club of the Students’ Association, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, successfully launched the 3rd Volume of the READ Digital Magazine on 14 July 2026 at the K4 202 Hall.
Held under the inspiring theme “The Digital Touch of Sustainable Reading~ තිරසාර කියවීමේ ඩිජිටල් ස්පර්ශය”, the event celebrated the power of digital reading, creativity, knowledge sharing, and innovation and sustainability reading. The launch reflected the Department’s continued commitment to fostering a vibrant reading culture while embracing digital transformation in library and information science.
The occasion was graced by Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe, Cadre Chair of the Department of Library and Information Science, Dr Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department, Dr Lagumdeniye Piyarathana Thero, Mr Tikiri Gunatilake, Dr K. R. N. Harshani, Rev. B. Somananda Thero, and Ms. K. I. Divyachapa Senarathna, Coordinator of the Media Club. Their presence added great significance to the event and encouraged the students in their academic and creative endeavours.
The event highlighted the importance of digital publishing as a platform for promoting reading, sharing knowledge, and inspiring creativity among undergraduates.
The successful launch of READ Digital Magazine – Volume 03 marks another milestone for the Department of Library and Information Science, reaffirming its vision of inspiring future generations through innovation, knowledge, and digital engagement.

📚 Successfully Completed the First Webinar of the “Talking Books” Series!
We are delighted to share the successful completion of the inaugural webinar in the “Talking Books” series, held via Zoom on 20 June 2026 and organized by the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya.
We were privileged to have Mr. Chandrarathna Bandara, who joined us from Canada, for an engaging and insightful discussion. The session was skillfully moderated by Senior Lecturer Sanjeewani Rathnabahu, whose thoughtful facilitation enriched the conversation.
The webinar attracted academics, students, library professionals, and members of the public, creating a vibrant platform for knowledge sharing and intellectual exchange. The active participation and valuable contributions from attendees made the event a truly rewarding experience for everyone involved.

A special discussion regarding an upcoming Fulbright Specialist visit to the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Kelaniya, was held on 24 April 2026 at the Vice- Chancellor’s Office of the University,
The meeting was attended by Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya; Dr Patrick McNamara, Executive Director of the United States–Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission; Senior Professor M. K. Weerasinghe; Senior Professor W. A. Weerasooriya; and Dr Priyanwada Wanigasooriya, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science.
The discussion focused on the planned visit of Dr Lara Szypszak from the Library of Congress under the Fulbright Specialist Program. Dr Lara Szypszak is expected to visit the Department of Library and Information Science for a one-month project aimed at strengthening the role of libraries in Sri Lanka.
This collaboration is expected to further strengthen international academic partnerships and highlight the important role of libraries in social development, civic engagement, and democratic transformation in Sri Lanka.
