The Unstoppable Force of All Blacks Rugby

Few players have combined power, skill, and longevity like Ma'a Nonu. Born in Wellington in 1982, Nonu became the heartbeat of the All Blacks midfield for over a decade and helped redefine what a world-class centre could be.

Nonu made his All Blacks debut in 2003 against England. Early in his career he was seen as a crash-ball runner, but he evolved into one of the most complete midfielders in the game. With his trademark dreadlocks, explosive fend, and deceptive offloading game, he terrorized defences while also developing a sharp kicking and distribution skill set.

His international career spanned 103 Tests from 2003 to 2015. Nonu played a key role in back-to-back Rugby World Cup wins in 2011 and 2015, becoming one of only 21 players to win the tournament twice. His try in the 2015 final against Australia sealed the win and capped a fairytale end to his All Blacks career. He retired from test rugby as New Zealand’s most-capped centre, scoring 31 test tries.

At Super Rugby level, Nonu represented the Hurricanes, Blues, and Highlanders across 17 seasons. Even into his late 30s, he continued playing professionally in France and the US, proving his durability. His career showed that raw physicality could be matched with finesse and game intelligence.

Off the field, Nonu is known for his humility and connection to his Samoan heritage. He rarely seeks headlines but remains a fan favourite for his passion and consistency in the black jersey.

Now 44, Nonu’s legacy lives on in every hard-running, ball-playing midfielder coming through New Zealand rugby. He didn’t just play the game. He changed how it was played.

The Bradby Shield history,

The Bradby Shield Encounter began on 31 July 1920 when Royal College, Colombo and Trinity College, Kandy first met on the rugby field. Trinity dominated the early years, winning for 21 straight years until Royal secured their first victory in 1941. In 1945, Royal College Principal E.L. Bradby donated a shield and proposed an annual two-leg series between the schools, a plan readily accepted by Trinity Principal C.E. Simithraaratchy. The shield, a wooden disc adorned with intricate Kandyan silverwork made by Kandyan silversmiths, has been awarded every year since. Played as two matches — one in Colombo and one in Kandy — the winner is decided on the aggregate score of both legs, with the shield presented to the winning captain after the second leg and kept at the winning school for the year. The series has run uninterrupted since 1920 and remains the blue ribbon of Sri Lankan schools rugby.
