Here are the key differences between ballistic missiles and cruise missiles:

**Ballistic Missiles:**
- Follow a **ballistic trajectory** - they're launched upward, arc through space, then fall toward their target under gravity
- Most of their flight is **unpowered** after the initial boost phase
- Fly at **very high altitudes**, often reaching space (suborbital or even orbital paths)
- Generally **faster** - can reach hypersonic speeds
- **Harder to intercept** due to their high speed and altitude
- Examples: ICBMs, Scud missiles, Patriot missiles

**Cruise Missiles:**
- Fly at **low altitudes** using wings for lift, following the terrain
- **Powered throughout flight** by jet engines or rocket motors
- Follow a **programmed flight path** that can include turns and course corrections
- Generally **slower** than ballistic missiles but more maneuverable
- Can be **harder to detect** due to low-altitude flight
- More **precise** targeting capabilities
- Examples: Tomahawk missiles, Russian Kalibr missiles

**Simple analogy:** A ballistic missile is like throwing a rock in a high arc - once launched, it follows a predictable path. A cruise missile is like a small, low-flying airplane that can navigate around obstacles to reach its target.

Both types can carry conventional or nuclear warheads, and each has tactical advantages depending on the mission requirements.
