Special Lecture by Professor Nasreen Chowdhory, Department of Political Science, University of Delhi.

During her visit to Sri Lanka, Professor Nasreen Chowdhory of the Department of Political Science, University of Delhi, delivered a special lecture to students of the Department of Political Science, University of Jaffna, at the invitation of the Head of the Department Dr. T.Vigneswaran.

The guest lecture was held on 11 August at 10.00 a.m. at the Faculty of Arts Seminar Hall on the topic “The Practice of Hospitality and Sanctuary in South Asia.” The programme was organised and coordinated by Dr. T. Vigneswaran, Head of the Department of Political Science.

The lecture was particularly relevant and beneficial to the students, as “Politics of South Asia” is offered as a course unit during the Second Semester of the Third Year of the undergraduate programme in Political Science. The lecture provided students with valuable academic insights into contemporary political and social practices in South Asia, particularly in relation to hospitality, sanctuary, and regional political dynamics.

Following the lecture, Professor Nasreen Chowdhory paid courtesy meets to the Vice-Chancellor Snr. Professr T.Velnamy, and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts Professor N.Piratheeparajah, as part of her academic visit to the University of Jaffna.

The Department of Political Science is pleased to announce that two of its former Assistant Lecturers, Mr. Manokaran Somapalan and Ms. Jeevarajah Dilakshana, have been awarded the prestigious Indian Council For Cultural Relations (ICCR) Scholarship by the Government of India to pursue their postgraduate studies in India.

Mr. Manokaran Somapalan will commence his Master's degree studies at Goa University, while Ms. Jeevarajah Dilakshana will pursue her Master's degree at University of Delhi.

யாழ்ப்பாணப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் அரசறிவியல் துறை மூன்றாம் வருட சிறப்பு கலை மாணவர்கள், தங்களது "தேர்தல் முறைகள், அரசியற் கட்சிகள், அமுக்க குழுக்கள்" பாடநெறியின் ஒரு பகுதியாக அண்மையில் ஒரு முக்கிய களஆய்வினை (Field Research Study) மேற்கொண்டு இருந்தார்கள்.

பொதுமக்களின் நேரடி அபிப்பிராயங்களைத் தொகுத்து, பகுப்பாய்வு செய்வதனை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டு, மாணவர்கள் 3 குழுக்களாகப் பிரிந்து யாழ்ப்பாணத்தின் வெவ்வேறு பகுதிகளில் இந்த ஆய்வுகளை மேற்கொண்டனர்.

📌 குழு 01 – அரசியல் கட்சிகளும் மக்கள் எதிர்பார்ப்பும்
தலைப்பு: உள்நாட்டு யுத்தத்திற்கு பின்னரான, தமிழ் அரசியல் கட்சிகள் மற்றும் அரசியல் தலைவர்களது இனப்பிரச்சினை தொடர்பான செயற்பாடுகளும் பொதுமக்களது எதிர்பார்ப்புக்களும்.

பிரதேசம்.

📌 குழு 02 – தேர்தல் முறையும் சவால்களும்
தலைப்பு: இலங்கையின் தேர்தல் முறையும் வாக்காளர் எதிர்கொள்ளும் சவால்களும்.
ஆய்வுப் பிரதேசம்: J/80 (நாவாந்துறை வடக்கு) பிரதேசம்.

📌 குழு 03 – சமஷ்டி பற்றிய மக்கள் விழிப்புணர்வு
தலைப்பு: சமஷ்டி அரசாங்க முறைமை தொடர்பான மக்களது அறிவு மட்டமும் அவர்களது அபிப்பிராயமும்.
ஆய்வுப் பிரதேசம்: உரும்பிராய் கிழக்கு பிரதேசம்

சமூகத்தின் கள யதார்த்தங்களை நேரடியாகக் கண்டறிந்து, மக்களின் அபிப்பிராயங்களை பதிவு செய்யும் நோக்கில் அமைந்த இந்த ஆய்வுகள்,
மாணவர்களின் தேடலும், அதன் மூலமாகக் கிடைக்கப் பெறும் பகுப்பாய்வு முடிவுகளும் எமது சமூக நகர்வுகளுக்குப் பெரிதும் பயனுள்ளதாக அமையும்.

Third-year Special Degree Students in Political Science from the University of Jaffna recently conducted an important field research study as part of their course, "Election Systems, Political Parties, and Pressure Groups."

With the objective of gathering and analyzing direct opinions from the general public, the students divided into three groups to conduct their research across different areas in Jaffna.

The key topics and research areas assigned to the student groups were as follows:

📌 Group 01 – Political Parties and Public Expectations
Topic: Post-civil war activities of Tamil political parties and political leaders regarding the ethnic issue, and the expectations of the general public.
Research Area: Thirunelveli west region.

📌 Group 02 – Election Systems and Challenges
Topic: Sri Lanka's electoral system and the challenges faced by voters.
Research Area: J/80 (Navanthurai North) region.

📌 Group 03 – Public Awareness on Federalism
Topic: The public's level of knowledge and their opinions regarding the federal system of government.

Research Area: Urumpirai East region.
Aimed at directly identifying societal ground realities and recording public opinions, the students' exploration and the resulting analytical findings will be highly beneficial for our social progression.

யாழ்ப்பாணப் பல்கலைக்கழக அரசறிவியல் துறையின் இரண்டாம் வருட சிறப்பு கலை மாணவர்கள், 'இலங்கையின் அரசியலமைப்பு வளர்ச்சி' எனும் பாடப்பரப்புடன் தொடர்புடைய களஆய்வை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளார்கள்.

இலங்கையின் நீண்டகால இனப்பிரச்சினைக்கான தீர்வுத் திட்ட வரைவுகள் மற்றும் புதிய அரசியலமைப்பு முயற்சிகள் குறித்து, தமிழ் அரசியல் பரப்பில் காணப்படும் பிரதான அரசியல் கட்சிகளின் நிலைப்பாடுகள் என்ன? அவர்களின் எதிர்கால அரசியல் நகர்வுகள் மற்றும் திட்டங்கள் எவை? போன்ற மிக முக்கிய விடயங்களை ஆழமாக அறிந்து கொள்வதற்காக இக்களவிஜயம் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது.

இதன்போது, தமிழ் தேசிய பரப்பில் இயங்கும் பிரதான நான்கு கட்சிகளின் தலைமைகள் மற்றும் பிரதிநிதிகளை மாணவர்கள் நேரடியாகச் சந்தித்து விரிவான கலந்துரையாடல்களில் ஈடுபட்டனர்:
1.இலங்கைத் தமிழரசு கட்சி
2.தமிழ்த் தேசியப் பேரவை
3.ஜனநாயக தமிழ்த் தேசியக் கூட்டணி
4.தமிழ் மக்கள் கூட்டணி

வகுப்பறைக் கற்றல் மற்றும் கோட்பாட்டு விளக்கங்களுக்கு அப்பால், சமகால அரசியல் தலைமைகளுடன் நேரடியாகக் கலந்துரையாடி, அரசியல் சாசன முயற்சிகள் மற்றும் தீர்வுத் திட்டங்கள் பற்றிய ஒரு தெளிவான, நடைமுறைப் புரிதலைப் பெற்றுக் கொள்ள இக்கலந்துரையாடல்கள் மாணவர்களுக்குப் பெரிதும் உதவியாக அமைந்தன.

The second-year Special Arts students of the Department of Political Science at the University of Jaffna have undertaken a field research study as part of the course 'Constitutional Development of Sri Lanka'.

This field visit was organized to gain a deep understanding of key issues, such as the positions of the main political parties within the Tamil political sphere regarding proposed solutions for Sri Lanka's long standing ethnic problem and new constitutional initiatives, as well as their future political moves and strategies.

During the visit, students met directly with the leadership and representatives of four major parties operating within the Tamil national landscape and engaged in detailed discussions:

1.Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK)
2.Tamil National Council (TNC)
3.Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA)
4.Tamil People's Alliance (TPA)

Beyond classroom learning and theoretical explanations, these discussions greatly helped the students gain a clear, practical understanding of constitutional efforts and proposed solution frameworks by interacting directly with contemporary political leaders.

As part of the PAVE project, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) focusing on the social engagement of political science students, bringing together around 27 stakeholders from various disciplines, was successfully held on March-31 (2026) from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm at the Tilko Jaffna City Hotel in Jaffna. The participants included major political parties, the Deputy Election Commissioner, election observers, polling station staff, academics and key civil society organizations from the Jaffna district. During the session, both study groups presented their research objectives, activities undertaken so far and preliminary findings. The discussion was conducted in a ‘World Café’ format to encourage inclusive and deep engagement among the participants.

Stakeholders actively contributed by sharing their experiences, perspectives, and practical insights related to electoral processes and youth political participation. The discussion provided an opportunity for co-creating actionable recommendations aimed at improving voter education and strengthening inclusive political engagement.

கிவுல் ஓயா திட்டம், உருவாகுமாயின் அதனால் தமிழ் மக்களினுடைய இருப்பிற்கு ஏற்படும் சவால்கள் பற்றிய ஓர் ஆழமான கலந்துரையாடல், யாழ்ப்பாணப் பல்கலைக்கழக அரசறிவியல் ஒன்றியத்தின் ஏற்பாட்டில் மார்ச்-09அன்று மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. இக்கலந்துரையாடலில் ஓய்வுநிலை சிரேஷ்ட நிர்வாக சேவை அதிகாரி இரேனியஸ் செல்வின் அவர்கள் வளவாளராக கலந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.
