Happy World Wetlands Day 🌍💧
Wetlands and people are life interlaced. Wetlands are central to our wellbeing. Whether it be through the provision of clean water, acting as the source of food or protecting us from extreme weather events, healthy wetlands equate to our wellbeing.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated each year on 2 February. The commemoration raises awareness and increases people’s understanding of the critical importance of wetlands. In every corner of the world, human beings have depended on wetlands for centuries, drawing sustenance, inspiration and resilience from these important environments.
Despite the numerous benefits that humans receive from wetlands, every day wetlands are damaged by human beings. Wetlands are being destroyed by unsustainable agricultural practices which are a primary cause of wetland loss through drainage and infilling. Many wetlands, particularly those near cities, have also been polluted by human activities and recently further degraded by plastic pollution, which exacerbates the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss and pollution ultimately affecting human health.
Current trends in human settlement also pose a major threat to the conservation and wise use of wetlands in and near growing cities. As cities grow and demand for land increases, the tendency is to encroach on wetlands and these are disappearing three times faster than forests. Hence, we need to stop the ongoing destruction and encourage actions to conserve and restore these vital ecosystems.

Here are some interesting facts about Thai Pongal
Pongal is a multi-day Hindu harvest festival primarily celebrated in the South Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and in some other parts of India. The word "Pongal" means "boiling over" or "overflowing" in Tamil, signifying abundance and prosperity.
The festival is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and is observed as a thanksgiving ceremony for the bountiful harvest, marking the end of the winter solstice and the start of the sun's six-month-long journey northwards (Uttarayanam).
Pongal typically lasts for four days and involves various rituals and traditions:
01. Bhogi Pongal: The first day is Bhogi Pongal, where people discard old belongings and celebrate the new harvest.
02. Thai Pongal: This is the main day of the festival when rice, lentils, and milk are boiled together in a pot until it overflows, symbolizing abundance. It is a day of feasting and thanking the Sun God for the harvest.
03. Maatu Pongal: The third day is dedicated to cattle, where they are bathed, adorned with garlands, and worshipped as they play a crucial role in farming.
04. Kaanum Pongal: The final day involves visiting relatives, exchanging greetings, and spending time with family.
During Pongal, colorful kolams (decorative patterns made with rice flour), traditional clothing, cultural performances, and various delicious dishes, especially the sweet rice dish called "Pongal," are part of the celebrations.
Overall, Pongal signifies gratitude, renewal, and the celebration of prosperity, agriculture, and the beginning of a new cycle.
