🚦 IELTS Writing Task 1 – Traffic Map Sample (Band 8+)

📌 Topic: Road redesign to reduce accidents

✨ 1) Structure (Perfect Map Outline)

🟦 Paragraph 1 – Introduction (1 sentence)
The two maps compare the current road system with a proposed redesign aimed at reducing traffic accidents.

🟦 Paragraph 2 – Overview (2 sentences)
Overall, the plan focuses on improving safety at major accident points.
The two biggest changes are:
✅ A roundabout at the City Road–Forest Road junction
✅ Traffic lights installed near the school

📍 City Road will also be straightened, while the school, supermarket and houses remain unchanged.

🟦 Paragraph 3 – Current Situation (Now)
At present:
➡️ City Road runs west–east but has a noticeable dog-leg bend in the centre.
➡️ Low Lane goes south through housing and connects with Forest Road.
➡️ Forest Road cuts diagonally across City Road downtown.

⚠️ Accident blackspots occur:
• near the school
• at the central junction
• close to the supermarket
• at the Low Lane–Forest Road intersection

🟦 Paragraph 4 – Future Plan (Changes)
Under the proposal:
✅ City Road will become a straight, continuous corridor.
✅ The City Road–Forest Road crossroads will be replaced by a roundabout.
✅ A signalised junction will be created near the school.
✅ Low Lane will connect directly to City Road, while its link to Forest Road will be removed.

🌟 2) Band 8 Sample Answer (Model Response)

The two maps compare the current road network with a proposed redesign aimed at reducing traffic accidents.

Overall, the plan concentrates on controlling traffic at the main conflict points by introducing a roundabout at the City Road–Forest Road junction and installing traffic lights near the school. The school, supermarket and surrounding housing will remain in the same locations.

At present, City Road runs from west to east but includes a noticeable dog-leg in the central area. Low Lane branches off near the western section and continues south past several houses, eventually connecting with Forest Road. Forest Road, which runs diagonally from the south towards the north, intersects City Road near the middle. Frequent accidents are reported near the school, at the central intersection, close to the supermarket, and at the southern connection between Low Lane and Forest Road.

Under the proposal, City Road will become a continuous straight corridor, while the hazardous link between Low Lane and Forest Road is set to be removed. A roundabout will replace the existing crossroads with Forest Road near the supermarket, and a signalised four-way junction will be created near the school where Low Lane meets City Road, thereby improving safety on the western approach.
