• This Poya Day signifies the end of the rainy season and the conclusion of the three-month retreat (Vassana-Samaya). One of the main events highlighted on this Poya Day is the announcement of the future Buddha-hood of Maitriya Bodhisatva.
• In the history of Sri Lanka, this Poya Day marks the laying of the foundation stone for Thuparamaya, Sri Lanka’s first stupa after the introduction of Buddhism.

Vap poya marks the end of the 3 months retreat by Buddhist monks which is known as the vas rainy season.
The laity offer katina robes on vap poya day to the Buddhist monks as an act of merit and to gain good karma.
This month is also called the cheevara masaya or vap masaya.
