The English Literary Association celebrated Halloween with Cursed Chapters on the 31st of October 2023 at the ICML with the participation of many enthusiastic members in their Halloween costumes.

The event was graced by Ms. Thilini De Silva, Dean of the Faculty of Business, alongside some of the lecturers from the faculty as well.

It was an evening full of fun games, sharing stories on horror movies and books while creating long-lasting memories. Everyone gathered in their best outfits in true Halloween spirit.

BA in Business Communication awarded by NSBM Green University (UGC approved) and BSc (Hons) in Business Communication awarded by Plymouth University, UK are three-year degree programmes that provide both the theoretical underpinning as well as functional acumen for scholars to be effective communicators in a wide array of sectors and careers to skillfully manage the diversity and fast pace of the contemporary business atmosphere. Both degrees reasonably blend knowledge of Business Management, Information Technology and Communication in order to groom the learners with understanding and skills in the above disciplines.

The NSBM English Day 2023: Empowering Digital Cultures, held on August 29th, 2023, at the NSBM Green University, stands as a remarkable triumph. Organized by the Department of English and Modern Languages, the event forged an all-encompassing platform to exalt and enrich the creative language skills of students from schools across the island.

Throughout the day, a vibrant tapestry of colours and bustling activities unfolded, with live contests in diverse locations within NSBM Green University. The array of inter-school competitions included a drama competition, a prepared speech contest, essay and poetry composition, and a literary and linguistic quiz competition.

With participation spanning more than 30 schools across the island, nearly 300 competitors converged to compete for victory from the morning until the afternoon. By sundown, these feisty competitors were awarded at an Awards eve for their many talents and skills in the above categories, judged by an independent panel of experts in the field.

The outcome of the assessments unveiled a sequence of achievements: Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, secured the honour of 'Best Drama', Royal College, Colombo, swept both the Lit-Lang Challenge and the 1st Prize for Poetry Writing in the O/L Category. Musaeus College outshone others in the Essay Writing O/L category, while the A/L category victor emerged from Mahanama College, Colombo. The Prepared Speech competition witnessed over 100 participants from various corners of the island vying for the O/L and A/L category's top honours. The crown of victory was seized by contestants from Hejaaz International School and Visaka Vidyalaya, Colombo, respectively.

The distinguished Awards ceremony welcomed the esteemed presence of notable figures: Prof. E.A. Weerasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of NSBM Green University; Mr. Orlando Edwards, Country Director of the British Council, Sri Lanka; and acclaimed writer Mr. Andrew Fidel Fernando. The evening was further graced by the attendance of Prof. Chaminda Rathnayake, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. Bharatha Dodankotuwa, Head of Academic Development and Quality Assurance, both lending prestige to the occasion. The event was also graced by the presence of Ms. Thilini De Silva, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Dr. Nuwanthie Katuwavila, Dean of the Faculty of Science, alongside numerous other academic and administrative personnel.

For the students, teachers, and parents who came from every corner of the island, the evening unfolded as a tapestry filled with unprecedented experiences and boundless inspiration. With the promise of returning with NSBM English Day 2024, the event concluded, leaving many with unforgettable memories.

The first-ever Poetry Slam and the badging ceremony of the English Literary Association was held on the 2nd of August from 2pm onwards at the Green Board Room. The event was graced by the presence of Ms Thilini de Silva - Dean, Faculty of Business, Ms Piyumi Wickramasinghe - Head, Department of English and Modern Languages, Lecturer-in-Charge of ELA Ms Fairoza Fairooz, fellow lecturers and students. With the completion of the badging ceremony of the newly elected board for the year 23/24, the intriguing poetic battle 'Poetry Slam' was conducted where twelve young poets showcased their poetic talents. Certificates were awarded for the Best Poem, Best Recital and Best Performance and also to all the participants as a gesture to appreciate the courage and effort to present their works of art.

Learning and revising the fundamentals of the vast discipline of Communication Studies lay the basic academic foundation for students following the Business Communication Degree at NSBM Green University. Kickstarting their exploration of knowledge and practical application, the 22.2 Batch organized a Murder Mystery centered around a thrilling plotline with many twists and turns along the way. The Game Zone, created by students as part of their first assignment, put the communication skills of both creators and players to the test in an exciting labyrinth of mystery.

The Talent Show - First Impressions was successfully concluded on 4th April 2023, marking the end of the English Intensive Course for the 23.1 batch. A plethora of entertaining items was performed by the talented undergraduates from the newest batch at the university.

The Department of English and Modern Languages signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC (DIMO) on 26th January 2023 at the NSBM Green University Premises.

The objectives of this partnership between NSBM and DIMO were to facilitate internship placements for undergraduates, provide students with training and industrial exposure, incorporate industry inputs for curriculum development and carry out academic collaboration and cooperation on mutually beneficial activities.

The MoU was signed between Prof. Baratha Dodankotuwa, Head of Academic Development & Quality Assurance of NSBM Green University and Mr. Navin Rupasinghe, Deputy General Manager, Employee Engagement and Transformation of Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC. in the presence of a bilateral delegation comprising Mr. Yohan Thilakaratne, General Manager, Corporate Communications and Ms. Aruni De Zoysa, Manager, Talent Acquisition as the representatives of Diesel and Motor Engineering PLC while NSBM Green University was represented by Ms. Thilini de Silva, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Ms. Piyumi Wickramasinghe, Head of the Department of English and Modern Languages, Ms. Natashya Chamba, Senior Lecturer, Department of English and Modern Languages, Lecturers of the Department of English and Modern Languages and Mr. Rushdi Hadhi, Manager – NFORCE, NSBM Green University.

The Department of English and Modern Languages took the initiative to organize Retorika: Transnational Dialogues, a business plan contest; the outcome of the telecollaboration project the department held with the University of Lorraine, France. A group of NSBM students representing each department of the Faculty of Business worked collaboratively with a class of Masters in Law students at the University of Lorraine to develop a business plan to be positioned in Europe. The NSBM students provided business insights while UOL students acted as the legal advisors for the business.

The first round of the competition was held on the 19th of December while the final round was successfully concluded on the 20th of December with the presence of an esteemed panel of judges: Ms. Thilini De Silva, Dean - Faculty of Business, Mr. Shehan Adhikari, co-founder of Leapstitch Apparel and the founder Fitzky and Ms. Hasulie Dias Abeysinghe, the assistant manager- corporate communications at T&FG group. The best four groups selected from the first round contest at the finals and the winner for the best promotional video and the best business plan were awarded to Sachin Dewantha from the Department of Management, Avishi Navanjana from the Department of English and Modern Languages, and Ovini Nishadi from the Department of Marketing representing Group 1 - Group IDEAL. The event was graced by Prof. E. A. Weerasinghe, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Baratha Dodankotuwa, Head- Academic Development and Quality Assurance, and the academics of the Faculty of Business.

The English Literary Association (ELA) held its October book club on the 31st at the ICML. It was themed around spooky Halloween 🎃.
The book club also served as a welcoming meeting for the newly appointed volunteers who joined with the intention of aiding ELA in organizing and carrying out its many colorful events!
