Uswathun Hasna Maha Vidyalaya is situated at Akuressa road ,Katugoda in the town of galle which is the capital city of southern province. The meaning for the name of this school is supposed to be “excelled and exemplary”. This School was established on 9th June 1929 and until 30th March 1933 it was administered as a private School. Thereafter from 1933 to 1938 it was run as a free – levying girls

school. Then again from 1938 to it was managed as a government school. During the year 1960 the then mayor of galle Al- Haj A.R.M.Thassim with the guidance of principal A.R.M.A.Cader this school was named as G/Uswathun hasana Girl’s School and was the first muslim girls school in the southern province. The boys were transferred to the separate school in a different land. The girls‘school consisted of 6 teachers and 160 students and classes were conducted from grades one to ten. In 1977 during the period of the then Principal Miss P.B.Mohamed , shifted this school which was housed at Muhiyaddeen Jumma Masjid premises was shifted to its own land at Akkuressa Road where it stands at present. As there was a severe shortage of teachers at Katugoda Boys’ School, the boys from Grade 6 to 11 who were reading , were transferred to this school and the girls reading from Grade 1 to 5 in the Tamil medium in this school were transferred to the Primary school. Thus on 16 June 1997 once again this school became a mixed school and was named as “ USWATHUN HASANA MAHA VIDYALAYA. Tidal wave Tsunami witch made terrible destruction to the world did not let this school be safe. It destroyed most part of the properties including one teacher and 28 students. But buy the untiring efforts tendered by the principal, teachers and the S.D.S. members, the school is lucky enough to get more physical properties than what it has lost . The new building complex consisting of all modern facilities which was donated by the Rotary Club, was a great achievement of the principal, Teachers and the S.D.S.
