Physicist Biography
Episode 02

Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist, widely regarded as one of the most influential scientists in history. He is best known for his theory of relativity, particularly the equation , which expresses the equivalence of mass and energy. His 1905 paper on the special theory of relativity revolutionized our understanding of space, time, and energy. Later, in 1915, he extended these ideas in his general theory of relativity, which described gravity as a curvature of spacetime caused by mass.

Einstein’s contributions go beyond relativity. He played a pivotal role in the development of quantum theory, particularly through his explanation of the photoelectric effect, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. His work laid the groundwork for modern quantum mechanics, even though he famously expressed discomfort with some of its probabilistic interpretations, stating, "God does not play dice."

Einstein emigrated to the United States in 1933 to escape N**i persecution and worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Beyond his scientific contributions, he was known for his advocacy for civil rights, pacifism, and his opposition to nuclear weapons after their development. His scientific genius and moral philosophy have left an enduring legacy.

Episode 01

Isaac Newton (1642–1727) was an English physicist, mathematician, and astronomer whose contributions revolutionized science. He is most famous for his laws of motion and law of universal gravitation, which laid the foundation for classical mechanics. Newton's three laws of motion describe the relationship between a body and the forces acting on it, providing a framework for understanding the movement of objects. His law of gravitation explained how bodies attract each other with a force proportional to their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, fundamentally changing the study of astronomy and physics.

In mathematics, Newton co-developed calculus, independently of the German mathematician Leibniz. Calculus became a critical tool for solving complex problems in physics, engineering, and economics. Newton also made significant advances in optics, discovering that white light is composed of a spectrum of colors, which he demonstrated using a prism.

His most famous work, Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687), often called the Principia, is considered one of the most important books in the history of science. It laid out his laws of motion and universal gravitation, influencing not only physics but the entire scientific method. Newton’s discoveries laid the groundwork for centuries of scientific progress.
