International Exchange Alumni | Inspire. Empower. Connect. 24/04/2014

Dear alumnus of U.S. Department of State sponsored programs,

"World Change Starts With Education". English being the global language we cannot ignore rural underprivileged kids who are in dark without English literacy. They lack exposure to English as they are not from English speaking background. They need more familiar & appealing texts in English to start with it. So, it's our aim to kindle their interest in English by providing them a local flavor through translating Sri Lankan folk stories into simple English.

90% of local folk stories are unwritten & it's our responsibility too to preserve them for the future generation. We will educate Youths of the value of our cultural heritage as well as how to use them for a service. Youth volunteers will collect folk stories from villagers. We will train English teachers on Translation Methodology to continue this trend. Sustainability of the project will be taken care of through networking & sharing folk stories as e-books & audio books on the web even after the project grant period.

Please visit https://alumni.state.gov/

and cheer our project through

to make this venture a success. It will bring light to many eyes and many innocent minds to see the world as you do...

Please spend few minutes for them...............

International Exchange Alumni | Inspire. Empower. Connect. We have extended the deadline by 24 hours! So now you have until 11:59pm Thursday April 24 to submit your proposal. Remember to have at least 5 alumni members on each team.

Embassy Invests in English Teachers 23/04/2014

The U.S. Embassy recognizes the importance of English language learning in Sri Lanka and offers extensive support to English language teachers and students. English Language Fellow Ms. Carol Marsh conducted workshops for teachers and university lecturers in Matara and Tissamaharama in late January. She conducted a two-day workshop at the University of Ruhuna English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) where she demonstrated fun, student-centered teaching methodologies. Teachers learned to engage students so they can quickly become conversational in English. Ms. Marsh also visited the English Access Micro Scholarship Programs in Matara, Tangalla and Tissamaharama on February 1 and 2, 2014. She conducted interactive learning activities and spoke about American culture. The Embassy sponsors 12 Access Centers across Sri Lanka, providing hundreds of youth the opportunity to become proficient in English.

U.S. Sports Envoys visit Access Center in Matara 23/04/2014

The U.S. Embassy's Sports Envoys visited the Access Center in Matara on April 21. Edna Campbell, Tamika Williams and Becky Bonner of the U.S. Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) interacted with students of the English Access Micro Scholarship Program and shared with them the benefits of learning English to secure better universal opportunities. The Envoys also showed the students a video which highlighted the professional women's basketball culture in U.S., explained the impact basketball has had in their lives and encouraged the students to work hard to achieve their ambitions. The Embassy has 12 Access Centers located in many provinces of Sri Lanka providing English enrichment courses to over 500 students of low income families.
