If you have the basic soft skills like listening to others, being respectful, supportive, seeking help and caring for others, it will help you create a better culture, built on teamwork with a willingness to take a step back, allow someone else to move forward and genuinely celebrate the success of your colleagues.

The bottom line: culture is an important component of delivering results, and soft skills are the ways you create the culture.

Baby Steps to Big Results.

Let me offer a reflective exercise you can do right now.

Think of a big result that you need to achieve, related to your work.
Think about the soft skills required to successfully achieve it.

For example, suppose you need to achieve your sales target.
This requires you to have more customers buying your products.
Better listening skills are needed to understand the customers.
The soft skills required are empathy, trustworthiness, and confidence.

Similarly, think about the soft skills you need to achieve your big result.
And then you will find that the strategy to improve sales will not only have the technical steps but also, perhaps, the more important softer aspects.

This will make your approach more genuine, and your big results will be more meaningful. It will be true to your purpose.

And that's purposeful leadership!

Work on your inner strength and inner resources. That's the difference between purposeful leaders and leaders who lead with their position.

Purposeful leaders prioritise developing their inner resources based on decent human values. Other leaders prioritise developing their outer skills. What’s your choice?

It's about taking those baby steps, starting to care for our colleagues. And that way, the organisation benefits, our colleagues benefit, and we too benefit, individually.

One way to overcome this is to take a broader perspective. What is the common outcome of both these options?
As you can see from the example I just provided, the most common approach is to ensure the organisation's success and growth. And for the organisation to be successful, on one hand you have to be profitable, on the other hand you need to have happy people.
Now, isn't there a way you can actually achieve both? Ask yourself, “Can we keep people happy, energised, so that they become more productive, more creative, more innovative, and more cost-efficient?”
Because if they are cared for, they will think about what they can do to look after your organisation.
And as they start doing that, you will find that your sales are increasing, your cost is reducing, and the organization is becoming more profitable.
That's what a purposeful leader would do.

I only understood the notion of purpose at the age of 33. All my life struggles and challenges led me to that moment. And ever since, I have been on a quest to enable people I meet who are interested to find their own sense of purpose.

Sometimes I am asked this question: “Do I have to know my purpose before I select my vocation or my career”? And my answer has always been a reflective question, rather than a clear yes or no type. In this video, I explain my thoughts and experiences about this question, from my experience of developing leaders and organisations over the past three decades.

Can you really be a purposeful leader without having the title?
You can be a purposeful leader right now, doing what you currently do. You may not have people reporting to you. But you can start working with your colleagues, helping them, listening to them, creating teamwork, and making a genuine contribution.
You can start by giving positive feedback and improvement feedback to your colleagues and even to your leader.
Take baby steps. Help those around you. That makes you a purposeful leader. Remember, leadership is not the title. It's your behavior. It's your attitude.
