The events of 1886 became the foundation for what is now known as International Workers’ Day, also called Labor Day or May Day in many countries around the world.

1993, The Assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadasa 🇱🇰
On This Day, on May 1, 1993, Ranasinghe Premadasa, the 2nd Executive President of Sri Lanka, was assassinated during a May Day rally in Colombo in one of the most shocking political attacks in Sri Lankan history.
The explosion took place at around 12:45 PM near Armour Street, while Premadasa was supervising the United National Party (UNP) May Day procession. The attack was carried out by an LTTE su***de bomber identified as Kulaveerasingam Veerakumar, also known as “Babu.”
The su***de bomber approached the President near his vehicle before detonating explosives strapped to his body. Premadasa, along with more than 20 others, including members of his security staff, was killed in the blast, while dozens were injured.
Born on June 23, 1924, Premadasa rose from humble beginnings to become one of Sri Lanka’s most influential political leaders. He served as Prime Minister from 1978 to 1988 and later as President from 1989 until his death in 1993. He was widely known for major housing and poverty alleviation programs such as the Gam Udawa movement.
His assassination came during the height of the Sri Lankan Civil War and marked a major turning point in the country’s political history. Following his death, Prime Minister D. B. Wijetunga became acting President.

1945, The End of a Dictator ⚔️
On This Day, on April 30, 1945, Adolf Hi**er, the dictator of N**i Germany, died by su***de in the Führerbunker in Berlin as Soviet forces closed in during the final days of World War II in Europe.
Just one day earlier, on April 29, he married his longtime companion Eva Braun, after years of a largely private relationship. The couple remained together until their deaths inside the bunker.
By late April 1945, Berlin was surrounded by the Soviet Red Army. With Germany’s defeat inevitable, Hi**er chose to remain in the bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery rather than flee. On April 30, he and Eva Braun ended their lives, and their bodies were later burned by aides according to his instructions.
Hi**er had risen from a World War I soldier, decorated with the Iron Cross, to become the leader of the N**i Party. As Chancellor from 1933 and Führer from 1934, he established a totalitarian regime responsible for unprecedented destruction across Europe, including the Holocaust and the deaths of millions.
Following his death, senior N**i officials attempted to continue a short-lived government, but Germany’s collapse was unavoidable. On May 7, 1945, Germany formally surrendered, bringing an end to the war in Europe.
👉 A moment that marked the collapse of N**i leadership and the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe.

1933, Anagarika Dharmapala, pioneer of modern global Buddhism, passes away 🙏
On This Day, on April 29, 1933, Anagarika Dharmapala, one of the most influential figures in modern Buddhist history, passed away at the age of 68 in Sarnath, Varanasi, India.
Born on September 17, 1864, in Matara as Don David Hewavitharane, he later became known as Anagarika Dharmapala. He was a Sri Lankan Buddhist revivalist, a writer, and a key figure in the country’s independence movement against British rule.
Dharmapala played a crucial role in reviving Buddhism both in Sri Lanka and globally. He founded the Mahabodhi Society, working to restore sacred Buddhist sites, especially Bodh Gaya, and to spread the teachings of the Buddha worldwide. He preached across Asia, Europe, and America, becoming one of the first modern global Buddhist missionaries.
His global impact was highlighted when he represented Buddhism at the historic World's Parliament of Religions in 1893 in Chicago, introducing Buddhist philosophy to an international audience.
In his later years, he was ordained as a monk, taking the name Ven. Sri Devamitta Dharmapala. Even in his final days, he remained devoted to spreading the Dhamma.
His famous final wish reflected his lifelong mission:
“Let me be reborn… I would like to be born again twenty-five times to spread Lord Buddha's Dhamma.”
Dharmapala’s legacy lives on as a pioneer of modern global Buddhism and a driving force behind the revival of Buddhist identity and heritage.
