1st Announcement

We are delighted to announce that the Biodiversity Society and Faculty of Science and Marine Environment, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, will proudly host the 2nd International Biodiversity Symposium (IBDS2026) from 8–10 September 2026 at UMT. This prestigious international event will be conducted in a hybrid format, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders from around the world to share insights and advance knowledge in Biodiversity Conservation and Management.

With the theme “Connecting People and Nature: Advancing Biodiversity and Climate Resilience for a Sustainable Future,” IBDS2026 provides a platform for interaction among researchers, conservationists, policymakers, as well as young researchers and students, to exchange current research and innovations in conservation and management, green and sustainable development, biodiversity, and emerging technologies in biodiversity studies.

Abstract Submission : 5 March 2026 – 31 July 2026
Early bird date : 5 March 2026 – 30 April 2026
Normal date : 1 May 2026 – 31 July 2026

An enchanted forest 🩷 The Hippocampus bargibanti, or Bargibant's pygmy seahorse, is breathtakingly tiny - a fully grown adult no larger than a human fingernail. They are found in the coastal waters of Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Beyond their diminutive size, pygmy seahorses have the ability to camouflage themselves among the branches of vibrant gorgonian corals. If the coral has more red tones, the tiny seahorses will take on a reddish look too. Unlike other seahorses, male pygmy seahorses use a pouch in their trunk – not their tail – to brood their young. Coral reef degradation, habitat loss, ocean acidification and rising ocean temperatures are some of the threats pygmy seahorses face. As a coastal species, Bargibant’s pygmy seahorses suffer from habitat destruction through indiscriminate fishing practices like blast fishing and gillnetting, as well as pollution and coastal development.
