Thai Pongal: A Brief Introduction

Thai Pongal is the traditional Tamil harvest festival. The word "Thai" refers to the 10th month of the Tamil calendar, and "Pongal" means "to boil over" or "overflow." It is a time of deep gratitude to Nature, the Sun God (Surya), and the Farm Animals that make the harvest possible.

How it is Celebrated in 2026
The festival spans four days, with the main events happening right now:
• Bhogi (Jan 13-14): Cleaning the home and burning old things to symbolize a fresh start.
• Thai Pongal (Jan 14-15): The most important day. Families cook a sweet rice dish (Pongal) in a clay pot. When it boils over, everyone shouts "Pongalo Pongal!" to welcome prosperity.
• Mattu Pongal (Jan 16): A day to thank cattle. Cows and bulls are bathed, their horns are painted, and they are fed special treats.
• Kaanum Pongal (Jan 17): A day for family reunions, visiting relatives, and community bonding.
