Koddamunai bridge connects Puliyanthivu island to the rest of Batticaloa main land. Before the koddamunai bridge was constructed, Batticaloa gate area was used at a loading and unloading point. Old cranes used during that time is still visible at the location. It is believed that William Ault, the first Methodist missionary landed in Puliyanthivu. A statue is placed next to the Batticaloa gate to remember is valuable service.
