Children may play, learn and experience the world in different ways.

In Episode 04 of our Special Education Needs series, we hear from professionals working directly with autistic children about recognising those differences and responding to each learner’s individual needs.

For some autistic children, everyday environments can feel overwhelming.

Sounds. Lights. Smells. Textures. Even a trip to the supermarket can become difficult when the brain processes sensory information differently.

Understanding sensory processing helps us better understand behaviour and respond with patience, support and the right accommodations.

Through PERT, Saint Lucia is investing in strengthening support for learners with Special Education Needs, including building the capacity of educators to better understand and respond to different learning needs.

On the ground in Vieux Fort 📍

On Friday August 22, 2026, the PERT team joined officials from the Ministry of Education and technical personnel for a site visit to the proposed location of a new Special Education Needs (SEN) School in Vieux Fort.

With plans in hand, the team walked the site, examined the surrounding area and discussed some of the practical, technical, environmental and social considerations that will shape the development of the new facility.

The proposed school is part of PERT’s wider investment in strengthening support for learners with Special Education Needs and creating more inclusive learning environments across Saint Lucia.

The series builds on Destigmatization of Autism, a documentary funded by the Global Partnership for Saint Lucia Ministry of Education, through the OECS PEARL Project. An initiative of the Early Childhood Unit of the Ministry of Education.

On 23 June 2026, Saint Lucia officially launched the Programme for Education Realignment and Transformation (PERT).

Over the next four years, PERT will invest in stronger schools, inclusive education, technical and vocational training, climate resilience and the professional development of educators.

But at its heart, PERT is about something much simpler: creating opportunities for every learner to thrive.

This is just the beginning.
