CDE in Laos CDE has been working in Laos for several years, generating knowledge for action together with national and local partners.

Building on our regional work in Southeast Asia, we support sustainable development by linking research with practice and policy. Our work in Laos focuses on three main areas:

- Land and natural resource governance (including tenure and land investments)
- Agroecological transitions and climate resilience for farming and rural livelihoods
- Landscape biodiversity, including solutions that promote sustainable investment

The First Biodiversity Destination Forum was officially launched at Nam Kat Yorla Pa, bringing together representatives from the government, research, NGOs, and the tourism sector to promote biodiversity-based tourism and conservation in Lao PDR. The forum aims to strengthen collaboration in positioning the country as a leading ecotourism destination in the region and internationally, while showcasing its rich biodiversity and natural heritage.

The Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) participated in this launch: representatives of Pha Khao Lao, the national agrobiodiversity knowledge platform shared their expertise on biodiversity information management. This expertise is central to support the identification, mapping, and promotion of biodiversity destinations across Lao PDR, and to help strengthen the link between biodiversity conservation, sustainable tourism, and local livelihoods.

In 2025, the Center for Development and Environment (CDE) and the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI), assessed the use of wild food resources in target communities, as part of the Agriculture for Nutrition Phase II (AFN II) project.

Data analysis has been completed and NAFRI is currently presenting findings to provincial and district agriculture and forestry authorities, and to communities in the villages where the survey was conducted. The aim is to review and integrate the research findings into local planning and development strategies, particularly those related to the conservation, management, and sustainable use of wild food resources.

Stakeholders identified priority activities for forest species in 50 villages across 17 districts and for aquatic species in 40 villages across 20 districts. The project aims to raise awareness of the importance of wild food resources as an essential component of local food systems while promoting their sustainable conservation and management to support improved food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods.

During the last weekend of June 2026, early adopter cocoa farmers from across Laos gathered in Vientiane Capital. This unique farmer-to-farmer exchange, with expert advice from Vietnam and Laos, provided a space for local smallholders and processors to:
๐Ÿค Network and build cross-regional partnerships.
๐Ÿชต Share best practices for high-quality cocoa bean processing.
๐ŸŒณ Learn about climate-smart farming practices.

Through the SDC-funded Land for Life (LfL) project, we are promoting a sustainable cocoa value chain in Laos, paving the way toward climate-resilient agricultural practices and sustainable commercial use of land ๐ŸŒโœจ

The Agroecology Learning Alliance in South-East Asia (ALiSEA) is a network of 200 member institutions in the Mekong Region. CDE played a major role in helping to develop the networkโ€™s digital knowledge hub.

From 25th to 29th of May 2026, ALiSEA conducted a regional workshop in D**g Thap Province (Southern Vietnam). CDE conducted a training on the writing of policy and practice briefs and contributed actively to discussions on the future governance model of the ALiSEA network.

From 22nd to 24th June, CDE Laos organised an intensive writing retreat with partners from Laos (NUoL and NAFRI) and Cambodia (Royal University of Agriculture).
The retreat was conducted in the frame of the โ€œClimate-Resilient Integrated Farming Systems in Cambodia and Laos (CRIFS) Project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. A key achievement of these three days was the finalisation of a comprehensive collection of materials for higher education teaching on the topic of integrated farming systems, which will be availed to lecturers of the three participating institutions.

On 22nd May 2026, a new NTFP Herbarium was launched under the Agriculture For Nutrition Project Phase II - AFN II, supported by IFAD and GAFSP. The Herbarium compiles and illustrates data and information from the Phakhaolao Database and other sources. It avails easily understandable and illustrated educational materials with valuable information on wild foods and medicinal plants. The Herbarium aims to raise awareness about the rich agrobiodiversity heritage of Lao PDR and to promote the sustainable use of natural resources.

๐ŸŒ Wild foods are more than traditional foods: they are a foundation for healthy diets, resilient ecosystems, and sustainable livelihoods.

From 23โ€“27 March 2026, a team from the National Universityโ€™s Botany Unit (Faculty of Natural Sciences), in collaboration with local authorities and villagers, conducted a field survey in Lai Gnai Village, Beng District, Oudomxay Province.

๐Ÿƒ 12 wild food plant species were collected for nutritional analysis at the laboratory of the Chemistry Department, Faculty of Natural Sciences, National University of Laos:
Fiddlehead fern, Indian trumpet flower, Wild Banana, Carlet-fruited Gourd, Spiny Amaranth, Asiatic pennywort, Heartleaf, Galanga, Turkey berry, Bitter Bamboo, Soap Pod and Melientha.

These plants are widely used in daily meals and are valued for both their nutritional and cultural importance. The laboratory results will provide evidence about their nutrient contents and support efforts to promote nutritious local foods and conserve biodiversity in Laos.

๐Ÿ”ฌ ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜โ€™๐˜€ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜?
All specimens are currently undergoing detailed nutritional analysis to determine how they might contribute to community health and food security. The study will compare nutrient content between plants collected from the wild and those grown under domestication. This will help assess whether domestication can maintain or enhance nutritional value while reducing harvesting pressure on natural ecosystems.

โœจ Stay tuned for upcoming results on the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients found in these valuable forest foods!
