NTDs or Neglected Tropical Diseases are a diverse group of health conditions that are mainly prevalent in tropical areas, mostly in impoverished communities, and are often associated with poor sanitation and hygiene. With the school-age children as one of the high-risk groups infected by NTDs, it is important to make sure that learning institutions are safe and clean to prevent the spread of these diseases.

Education is the right of every child and fulfilling universal access to quality education includes creating a healthy learning environment. Since 2011, GIZ has been supporting Ministries of Education in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, and the Philippines in their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives to provide students with inclusive and conducive spaces for learning. Through the Hygiene Behaviour Change Coalition, GIZ continues to support the implementation of WASH in Schools to strengthen pandemic resilience. With funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development in 2023, GIZ advances the rights of girls through Menstrual Health and Hygiene as a springboard to address misconceptions and stigma surrounding menstruation and reduce gender inequity. Through these initiatives, the program aims to ensure that children can learn with dignity, in a healthy environment where they feel safe and accepted.

The Regional Fit for School Programme officially closed its 3rd phase on 22nd November in Bangkok, Thailand through the Fit for School Conference. Launched in 2011, the program aimed to provide simple, sustainable, scalable and systems-oriented solutions to address the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) gaps in schools and create a healthy and dignified learning environment for students. The conference served as a platform to look back at how the program started, explore themes of emerging relevance, and for countries to share best practices, strategies, and direction for WASH in schools.
Present in the 3-day event were delegates from the 4 implementing countries – Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, and the Philippines, as well as representatives from countries in Africa where the program is currently running. November 3 is One Health Day!

One Health is an interdisciplinary approach that recognizes the connection and interdependency of the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems.
This approach requires multi-sectoral collaborations at the different levels of society to address risks to health and the environment. GIZ’s Regional Fit for School Program supports Ministries of Education in implementing interventions that are aligned with the One Health concept.

The session organized by GIZ in the recently concluded Water and Health Conference at the UNC highlighted the importance of the One Health approach in preventing and controlling infectious diseases and addressing climate change. It also presented opportunities for implementing the One Health approach in the school setting through its integration into existing WASH in Schools programs. The session stressed the importance of having WASH interventions in place, complemented by school-based deworming, food safety measures, and health education.
Schools serve as strategic venues to implement tangible solutions to further the One Health approach and improve health and education outcomes of children and the community at large.

District Education Officials learn how to use the Ministry of Education and Sports’s monitoring system for WASH in Schools.

The 9th WinS ILE was successfully concluded last September 21 after 5 technical sessions over the course of 3 weeks, organized by GIZ, UNICEF, WaterAid, and Save the Children, and co-hosted by SEAMEO. The virtual learning exchange was attended by over 250 participants from 22 countries across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. In his closing remarks, Mr. Markus Lange, Division Head (Asia 1) of GIZ stressed the great amount of work to be done to achieve the WASH-related SDG targets and expressed his hopes that the opportunities created by the pandemic can be translated into action.
Technical sessions focused on relevant topics and their implications to WASH in Schools, such as reopening of schools, climate resilience, sustainable financing, digital transformation, and capacity-building in which different countries from the regions presented some of their best practices and approaches. In the closing event, Ms. Khampaseuth Kitignavong, Director General of the Education Department in the Ministry of Education and Sports of Lao PDR shared the main action points for 2022-2023 to address WinS situation in the country. Side events that discussed WinS monitoring and menstrual health and hygiene were also conducted during the learning exchange.
The WinS ILE is an annual event that convenes government officials and stakeholders from South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific to learn about best practices and experiences of implementing WASH in Schools in the regions and strengthen each country’s commitment to ensuring schools can provide basic services of water, sanitation, and hygiene to all students.
