On July 18, 2016 a field trip was initiated with cleaning buoy, sensors, and the replacement of EXO (water quality instrument) for KISR-01 in Kuwait Bay.
A page dedicated for the activities, achievements, and ongoing projects of the Coastal Management Program at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research.
The Coastal Management (CM) Program at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research is designed to address both natural and man-made stresses on Kuwait’s coast, and to mitigate their impact on the nation’s most vulnerable coastal infrastructures.

Alanba newspaper has published an article regarding to the explosion of the petrochemical complex in Iran that occurred on 6/7/2016. The Coastal Management Program at Kuwait Institute of Scientific research has made some prediction studies using numerical modeling to test whether the contaminants associated with the explosion of Abu Ali petrochemical complex in Iran will have effects on Kuwait coasts. The model is based on 3-D assumptions and able to predict the detailed hydrodynamic processes at the northern Arabian Gulf. The predictions have shown no harm to Kuwait territorial water. Great job Dr. Yousef Alosairi.

Coastal Management Program (CMP) in Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) had the opportunity to host Discovery Channel, who are working on the Al-Shagaya Renewable Energy Project and wanted to highlight KISR as a world class institute. As such, they filmed the CMP facilities in action, generating waves using both the wave basin and the glass flume. The crew members were very impressed and looked forward to potential future projects together.

KISR-01 was redeployed on May 30, 2016. The buoy measures water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll level, water temperature, currents, tides, waves, salinity etc. Moreover, it measures metrological parameters like air temperature, wind speed, humidity, solar radiation and rainfall. The recorded data can be accessed online in our facility without the actual need to be in the field to collect the data.
Project: Rehabilitation of Failaka Marina
------------------------------------------------------------
Failaka is considered to be one of the most important islands in kuwait, from a touristic point of view, as it is the second biggest island in the country. Currently, it has a marina which is managed by the Ministry of communication (MOC) and Touristic Enterprise Company.
As the coastal waters around Failaka is very turbid, and the current velocity can reach up to 0.7 to 0.8 m/s during spring tide, this marina has a severe siltation problem. MOC has signed an MOU with KISR in 2015 to carryout studies and come up with solutions to assess the annual sedimentation, revised the current design of armor for the breakwater and assess harbor oscillation for the prevailing wave conditions.
The Coastal Management Program in KISR is carrying out studies to solve these issues. The tools used for the study are: field measurements of needed parameters, physical modeling on the marina in the wave basin (as shown in the footage) and numerical modeling of the flow field and sediment transport.
The results of this study will help MOC in estimating the annual dredging needed and propose modifications to the current marina configuration to reduce the rate of sedimentation.
