As the Coronavirus pandemic rages on, exposing and exacerbating historical inequalities at all levels of our communities and country, it’s easy (and entirely natural) to feel powerless.

“If this time triggers a deeply held sense of helplessness and a primordial sense of isolation, then it can reinforce the trauma that already lives in us,” writes Gabor Maté in our September/October issue. “So the first thing to realize is that—while it may not be accessible to all of us at all times—the capacity to act with a sense of agency is there.”

아마추어 화가나 어린아이, 정신병자 같은 사회적 약자들의 작품에 매료되어 이러한 미술을 ‘아르 브뤼 Art Brut'라고 칭하고, 가공되지 않은 원시적이고 본원적인 미술에 역점을 두었다. 그의 예술은 앵포르멜 미술운동의 이념적 토대가 되었으며 비주류미술인 ‘아웃사이더 아트’에도 큰 영향을 미쳤다.
