You will notice that many short Korean sentences have the exact same word repeated at the beginning and at the end. Why is that? It’s partially for emphasis and partially for the overall balance of the sentence.
Here are the examples used in this video.
콜라 줄까, 콜라? (Do you want some coke?)
숙제 다 했어, 숙제? (Did you finish your homework?)
열쇠 어디 있어, 열쇠? (Where is the key?)
창문 닫아, 창문! (Close the window.)
빨리 와, 빨리! (Come on over. Hurry!)
7번 눌러, 7번. (Press number 7.)

I didn’t realize before, but after reading this comment, I learned that the Korean word 아리랑, at the letter level, can be a perfect palindrome. That’s really cool!
Click the link below to read our free Arirang guide, explaining the lyrics of the four major versions of Korea’s most well-known folk song. As you know, it was already the best-known folk song in Korea but BTS made it even more globally known by naming their new comeback album “Arirang”.

If you’ve learned any amount of Korean before, you’ve probably heard the name TOPIK at least once, which is THE official Korean proficiency test. We’ve published a detailed introduction video for the exam, where we also introduce our TOPIK books.
Comment “TOPIK” and we’ll send you the full guide video! 🇰🇷
So a few years ago I realized that I know more names of my international friends’ spouses/partners than I do of my Korean friends. (Unless I know the partners personally too.)
This is because in typical Korean conversations with your friends, coworkers or peers, when you talk about your girlfriend, boyfriend or spouse, you often just use titles like 여자친구, 남자친구, 남편, 와이프, etc. But in English (and in many other European languages as well), the actual NAME of the spouse or partner is more commonly used 😃
Have you noticed this difference yourself? 🤔
📍 Also please check out our Korean speaking app Seyo to have a lot more conversations in Korean and build confidence!
You can simply comment [seyo] here to get the app. 👍🏻
Comment “arirang” or 아리랑 below to get our free PDF introducing the actual folk song (in four major versions) 😍🇰🇷
Before BTS made the name Arirang famous worldwide, it was already the best-known folk song in Korea. Read the lyrics in our guide!
