Grammar of the Day: -기는커녕 🇰🇷📖

Do you know how to express "Far from it..." or "Let alone..." in Korean?
-기는커녕 is a high-yield TOPIK II pattern used when the reality of a situation is completely opposite to or much worse than what was expected.

3 natural examples:
주말에 쉬기는커녕 밀린 과제하느라고 밤새웠어요.
Rest? Far from resting, I pulled an all-nighter doing backlogged assignments.
돈을 모으기는커녕 이번 달 적자예요.
Save money? Far from saving, I'm in the red this month.
칭찬을 받기는커녕 지적만 잔뜩 받았어요. Praise? Far from it, I only got a ton of critiques.

The Rule to Remember:
The second half of your sentence must always describe a negative or lacking outcome.
If you attach it to a noun, drop the "기" and use N-은/는커녕 (e.g., 밥은커녕).

Learning Korean, i can often read and understand content,.. but freeze the second a real conversation starts. I'm sure most intermediate learners also face a similar problem, especially learning through textbook material.

So I added this stories feature into Hanuri app to train my listening + speaking:

Learning Korean gets easier when the lesson feels like real life.

This video is a beginner conversation from Hanuri set in a clothing store (옷 가게에서). You follow a simple back-and-forth between a shop staff member and a customer buying a T-shirt.

Phrases you’ll hear:
• 어서 오세요 (Welcome)
• 이 티셔츠를 사고 싶어요 (I want to buy this T-shirt)
• 얼마예요? (How much is it?)
• 색이 예쁜데요 (The color is pretty)
• 한번 입어 볼 수 있어요? (Can I try it on?)

It’s great if you’re learning Korean for travel, shopping in Korea, daily conversation, or building toward TOPIK later. Short stories like this help vocabulary stick because you hear the words in context, not as a random word list.

If you want to reach Level 5 or 6 in Korean, you have to stop using "A is B" and start using "A is more like B." 🇰🇷📖

-다기보다(는) is one of those patterns that examiners love in TOPIK II. It’s not just a comparison; it’s a way to refine your logic. You use it when you want to say, "Calling it 'A' isn't technically wrong, but calling it 'B' is much more accurate."

In a university setting or a professional meeting, this is how you sound precise. You aren't just giving an opinion; you're defining the situation.

Example: 친구라기보다 가족 같은 사람이에요.
(He’s more like family than just a friend.)

Grammar of the Day: -느라고 🇰🇷📖

Do you know how to make a polite, natural excuse in Korean without sounding like a textbook?

-느라고 is a key TOPIK II pattern used when your continuous action or choice prevented you from doing something else or led to a negative result.

3 practical ways to use it:

시험공부 하느라고 한숨도 못 잤어요. (Couldn't sleep a wink because I was busy studying.)
준비하느라고 연락이 늦어져서 죄송합니다. (Sorry for the late reply; I was busy preparing.)
드라마 보느라고 시간 가는 줄 몰랐어요. (Lost track of time because I was watching a drama.)

The Rule to Remember:

Never attach past tense (-았/었-) before -느라고! Keep the first verb in its stem form even when speaking about the past.

The phrase every textbook mentions, but mostly under explains it. 🇰🇷📖
잘 부탁드립니다 is the ultimate "Social Blanket." English doesn't have a direct equivalent, which is why we often end up with awkward translations like "Please treat me well."
In reality, it’s a phrase of humility and respect. You use it when you join a new lab, meet a senior (Sunbae) for the first time, or start a new project. It’s a way of saying, "I’m new here, I might make mistakes, so please guide me and let's have a good relationship."
The "Watchout" Logic:
Never use this as a "Thank you" after someone has finished a task for you. It’s a phrase for the beginning, not the end.

Stop using -아/어 요 for everything.

If you want to sound like a senior student or excel in a TOPIK essay, you need the "Natural Law" grammar.
-기 마련이다 is used when something is logically bound to happen. It's not a guess, it's an inevitable result.
In the lab, I hear this used for research results, human behavior, and even the weather.
