Greetings from the Institute of Indian Studies, HUFS!

The Institute of Indian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies will host the "The 3rd Korea-India 2030 Forum" online on 19th, January, 2022 (Wed.) as follows.

It will be held with two main topics, focusing on "Session 1. Current Challenges and Future Prospects of Indian/Korean Youth (English ONLY)" and " Session 2. An Encounter of India’s Diverse Culture with Korea (Korean ONLY)."

In Session 1, we shall have a look at the realistic problems faced both by Korean and Indian youth, particularly in terms of youth unemployment, political participation and gender issues.
Whereas in Session 2, we may also share our thoughts on India's diverse culture from the point of views of Korean, and also compare both nations' languages and cultures.
The forum is designed to provide a venue for dialogue and cooperation with graduate/undergraduate students and researchers from both Korea and India.

[Notice] Special Lecture

□ Institute of Indian Studies, Humanities Korea Plus Project Team (HK+) at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) will host a special lecture by Professor Travis L. Smith from Seoul National University on June 14th (Mon.). The title of the lecture is “Principles of Pleasure: Ethics and Aesthetics in the Kāmasūtra”


□ Vātsyāyana’s Kāmasūtra, regarded as paradigmatic textbook for s*x in the third century C.E., is centered on sophisticated practical techniques in a straightforward manner. However, it is based on Aesthetics and has ideological consistency. The lecture will show examples of Aesthetic aspects in Vātsyāyana’s text empathizing correlation of it with erotic experience.

Travis L. Smith is a Professor of Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations at Seoul National University. He conducted graduate work in Sanskrit language and South Asian religions at th e University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University (Ph.D.). He taught at the University of Florida and his major research interest is on the role of the Sanskrit Purāṇas in initial development of Hindu. His recent work ‘Kāśīkhaṇḍa(an extensive literary panegyric praising the ancient pilgrimage city of Varanasi)’ is ready to publish.
