□ The Seoul City Wall (Hanyang Doseong) was more than a military fortification. As the boundary of the Joseon capital, it reflected the city's political order, defense strategy, and urban development for over five centuries. Today, its surviving walls continue to reveal how the capital was organized and protected.

Beginning at Hyehwamun Gate and following the Naksan section to Heunginjimun (Dongdaemun), this evening walk examines the wall's military, political, and historical significance. Through the surviving landscape, participants will explore how Seoul's capital space was constructed, defended, and transformed from the Joseon dynasty to the present.

🎈1) Matters of Dining with the Eastern Barbarians: Who Gets the Bean and the Chopping Block? — From Historiography to AI

This workshop examines early Chinese ethnographic accounts of the so-called "Eastern Barbarians" (東夷) found in historical texts such as the Sanguo zhi (三國志) and Hou Hanshu (後漢書). Through close reading and discussion, participants will explore how early Chinese historiography described the societies of Northeast Asia, and how cultural practices—such as the use of ritual vessels (俎豆)—were used to mark distinctions between "civilized" and "barbarian." The title alludes to the classical phrase 俎豆之事, referring to matters of ritual practice that often function as markers of cultural hierarchy in these texts. The workshop will also compare traditional historiographical interpretation with AI-assisted translation and analysis, reflecting on new possibilities and limitations in working with early historical sources.

This two-day intensive workshop introduces the foundational methods and materials of classical Korean philology (書誌學). Day one consists of hands-on bibliographic practice with guided instruction in core concepts and terminology, while day two features an on-site visit to the rare books collection at the Korea University Library. The workshop is designed for graduate students and advanced researchers seeking to strengthen their practical engagement with pre-modern Korean texts.

본 워크숍은《三國志》,《後漢書》등 역사서에 나타난 이른바 "동이(東夷)"에 관한 초기 중국 측 기록을 살펴봅니다. 자료 강독과 토론을 통해 초기 중국 역사서술이 동북아 사회를 어떻게 묘사하였는지, 그리고 조두(俎豆)와 같은 의례용 기물의 사용이 "문명"과 "야만"을 구분하는 표지로 어떻게 활용되었는지 탐구합니다. 워크숍 제목은 의례에 관한 일들을 가리키는 고전 표현 '조두지사(俎豆之事)'에서 유래한 것으로, 이는 해당 텍스트들에서 종종 문화적 위계를 나타내는 표지로 기능합니다. 또한 전통적인 역사서술 해석과 AI를 활용한 번역·분석을 비교함으로써, 초기 사료를 다루는 새로운 가능성과 한계에 대해 함께 성찰합니다.

We are delighted to announce the upcoming 13th KUGS Conference and 2026 Summer Connections Scholars in Conversation & Koreanist Meet-Up, proudly hosted by the Korea University Institute for Global Humanities Research and Collaboration.

The first day is dedicated to graduate student paper presentations for the 13th Korea University Graduate Student Conference, and the second day to the Koreanist Meet-Up.

This year's gathering brings together authors of recently published monographs on a shared theme — Ceremonies of Power: Ritual and Diplomacy in Korea–China Relations — for a series of book talks, followed by a networking reception for Korean Studies scholars based in Korea and abroad. We sincerely hope many of you will join us to connect, share insights, and build valuable relationships within our academic community.
