You hear the word “gene” all the time… but what exactly is a gene? 🤔

A gene is a section of DNA that contains information needed to make a functional product, often a protein.

Think of it like this:

📖 DNA = a cookbook
🍲 Gene = one recipe in the cookbook

Just like one recipe gives you instructions for making a particular meal, a gene contains instructions that help cells make a particular product.

And why does this matter in bioinformatics?

Because when we analyse DNA, we often need to identify where genes are and what they might do. 🧬💻

So, when you see a DNA sequence, remember:

It isn’t just a string of letters. There can be important information hidden inside it.

If you’re preparing for ABS Cohort 2, these are the basics you need to build your foundation.

Before you analyze biological data, you need to understand the biology behind it.

We’re breaking this topic into 5 lessons building your foundation step by step.

Let’s start with the basics.

The Central Dogma:

DNA → RNA → Protein

🧬 DNA stores the instructions.

🧬 RNA copies and carries those instructions to where they’re needed.

🧬 Proteins do the actual work building structures, speeding up reactions, sending signals.

Where do genes fit in?

A gene is a stretch of DNA that acts like a recipe instructions for building one specific product (usually a protein).

Your genome is the complete set of these instructions every gene, all in one place.

Why this matters for bioinformatics:

When you open a genomic file, you’ll see strings like:

ATGCGTAC…

Those aren’t random letters. They’re a language and DNA, RNA, and protein are three “dialects” of the same message.

Learn to read the biology first. Then the data starts to speak.

So… you want to learn Bioinformatics?

Before we start, there’s something you should know:

You don’t learn Bioinformatics in one day.

It’s a journey that takes you from understanding the biology to working with data 📊, using computational tools 💻, and eventually analysing real biological datasets.

And we’re going to break that journey down step by step.

One topic.
One skill.
One post at a time.

Oh, and if you don’t have a Galaxy Africa account yet…

This is your sign to get one. 👀🧬

🧬 Thinking about getting into Bioinformatics?

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry we’ve got you. 👇

There’s a lot to learn in bioinformatics, but you don’t need to figure it all out at once.

Here’s the roadmap we’ll be exploring together:

🧬 Biology Fundamentals
💻 Linux & Command Line
🐍 Python Programming
📊 Statistics & Data Analysis
🔎 Biological Databases & Tools
🧬 Sequence Analysis
🧪 Genomics & NGS
🚀 Specialization

And the best part?

We’ll take it one topic at a time.

So whether you’re completely new to bioinformatics or just trying to strengthen your foundation, follow along.

“The Question That Starts a Discovery”

Sometimes, it starts with a simple question:

“What can this data tell us?” 🧬

A researcher has DNA sequences.
Millions of pieces of biological information.
Patterns waiting to be found.

But raw data alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

With bioinformatics, researchers can organize, analyze, and interpret that data—turning complex biological information into insights that can help answer real scientific questions.

And that’s why learning bioinformatics matters.

Because behind every dataset is a question.
Behind every analysis is a possibility.
And behind every discovery is someone who decided to look deeper.

Starting your bioinformatics journey? 🧬💻

Here are 6 things we wish every beginner knew:

1. You will feel lost sometimes.
That’s completely normal. Learning something new comes with a learning curve.

2. You don’t need to understand everything at once.
Take it one concept, one tool, and one problem at a time.

3. Your first code won’t be perfect.
And it doesn’t need to be. Mistakes are part of learning.

4. Searching for answers is a skill.
Even experienced bioinformaticians look things up. Knowing how to find and understand information matters.

5. Consistency beats cramming.
A little progress every day can take you much further than trying to learn everything in one sitting.

6. You’re allowed to be a beginner.
You don’t need to know everything before you start.

At Africa Bioinformatics School, we believe learning is a journey — and every expert started somewhere.

Start where you are. Keep learning. Keep building. 🧬

What if bioinformatics was within reach for everyone?

Today, Galaxy Africa is helping turn that vision into reality.

It is a space where students discover bioinformatics, researchers turn complex datasets into meaningful insights, and scientists across Africa connect, learn, and collaborate.

Every workflow represents a new skill gained.
Every analysis brings us closer to answering important scientific questions.
And every discovery reminds us of what becomes possible when knowledge and technology are made accessible.

Because science shouldn’t be limited by geography, resources, or access.

Sometimes, all it takes to begin a journey of discovery is one click.

🧬 Think bioinformatics requires complicated software? Think again.

One of the things that makes getting started with bioinformatics easier is having access to the right tools.

At the Africa Bioinformatics School, analyses are carried out using Galaxy Africa — a free, browser-based bioinformatics platform.

That means you don’t need to install bioinformatics software on your computer to participate in the analyses.

Instead, you can access the platform through your browser and work with the tools you need to explore and analyse biological data. 💻🧬

For anyone new to bioinformatics, this removes one of the common barriers to getting started.

Less time worrying about installation.
More time learning, analysing, and discovering. 🌍
