The very first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay.
Uruguay hosted it because they were celebrating 100 years of independence and had also won Olympic football gold in 1924 and 1928.
Only 13 teams participated (7 from South America, 4 from Europe, 2 from North America).
All matches were played in the capital, Montevideo, mainly at the Estadio Centenario.
The final was between Uruguay and Argentina. Uruguay won 4–2 and became the first ever World Cup champions.
