Liberia faces serious challenges with drug abuse, crime, and a rising number of disadvantaged young people who feel abandoned by society. If the country truly wants a better future, stronger measures must be taken to protect citizens while helping young people rebuild their lives.
Many today look to El Salvador as an example of a nation that took a firm stand against gang violence and crime. Years ago, El Salvador was considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world. However, through strict government action, increased security measures, and the construction of the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) prison facility, the country has experienced a significant decline in gang activity and violent crime. Today, many citizens in El Salvador live with a greater sense of peace and security.
Liberia can learn from some aspects of that experience, especially the importance of decisive leadership and national security. However, Liberia’s situation also calls for a different approach. While criminals must face justice, many young Liberians involved in drugs are not beyond help. Across communities, interviews with struggling youth often reveal the same message: many want assistance, rehabilitation, education, and a second chance.
Instead of repeatedly arresting drug dealers and users only for them to return to the streets after short prison sentences, the Liberian government should invest in long-term rehabilitation and recovery centers. These centers should not only focus on punishment but also provide mental health support, vocational training, education, counseling, and discipline. Such institutions could help drug users recover while also separating dangerous criminals from peaceful citizens.
The future of Liberia depends not just on roads, buildings, and infrastructure but also on developing the minds and character of its people. A nation cannot truly progress when large numbers of its young people are trapped in addiction, unemployment, hopelessness, and crime.
At the same time, many ordinary citizens continue to struggle daily with poor living conditions, limited opportunities, inconsistent electricity, lack of running water, and weaknesses within the education system. Students sometimes face situations where professors are unpaid and unable to teach consistently, while many leaders and wealthy individuals send their own children abroad to study in better schools and enjoy more comfortable lives.
Leadership should not only be about personal success or protecting one’s own family. A leader who benefits from the taxes and sacrifices of citizens also has a responsibility to improve their lives. The more neglected and frustrated young people become, the greater the danger to society as a whole. Crime, violence, and drug abuse ultimately affect everyone, regardless of social class or political position.
Liberia still has hope because many young people are willing to change if they are given guidance, discipline, opportunity, and support. The country needs policies that combine justice with rehabilitation, accountability with compassion, and national development with human development. Investing in youth today is investing in Liberia’s future tomorrow.
